Speed Increase

[link to this post]

Howdy everone, Have been with AOL for many years, no real problems, up to a week ago my speed was more or less steady at 6.5Mbps. My contract is for a speed of 'up to' 8Mbps for which I pay just over £10 per month. My local BT exchange is approx 3/4 of a mile away, (measured in a staight line) most of the telephone lines in this area are underground. A month ago the green BT junction box which is 50m from my house was upgraded to fibre optics to the BT exchange mentioned above. To my amazement when I checked my speed last week it showed up as 10.5Mbps, I tried several other well known speed testers all of which confirmed this speed (approx) needless to say, I have been checking my speed several times a day since then. Have just checked again today using the 'Global Broadband Speed Tester' and it indicated a speed of 11.3Mbps. Bearing in mind that all these speed testers previously gave a me a speed of about 6Mbps. How is this possible? Even if it is to do with the upgraded fibre optics or perhaps the AOL router in the BT exchange (unbundled) has been upgraded, but my contract speedwith AOL is still only up to 8Mbps. Must be the Xmas fairy, guess it will go back to normal on the first Jan.2012.......PS. I was more than happy with my previous speed, and as I do not download large files, films etc, have not noticed any difference. best wishes....Mike.

It has nothing to do with the new green cab and fibre!

It is likely that you are not in an AOL LLU area and BT supplies your BB under contract to AOL and BT has upgraded your exchange from 20CN IPStream ADSL Max to 21CN WBC ADSL2+. Either that or AOL has removed the 8 Meg cap on your LLU ADSL2+, but I would not expect that.

Post your router stats and tell what exchange?

So it seems AOL has removed the 8 Meg cap on their LLU as that other user reported.

Is your line rental with AOL? Make sure they haven't moved you from 8 Meg Partial LLU to 24 Meg Full LLU. It would be the devil's own job getting your line back to BT when and if you leave AOL.
