How to avoid volume loss when speakers & headphones plugged?

[link to this post]

I have mains powered speakers and a headphone headset plugged in to the headphone socket on the back of my PC. The headset's microphone is plugged into the microphone socket as normal. The headphones and speakers are 'joined' together via a Y-lead.

If the volume control on the headphones is left towards the high setting not surprisingly the volume from the speakers is reduced.

Is there any simple way of connecting them to a switch so that one or the other is selected? I don't think I need them both at the same time though that might be an occasional requirement. If possible I want to keep the cables 'round the back' for tidiness.

Looks interesting, might take a punt at one though some of the reviews are a bit iffy. But for the price...

Do others have this problem?

And if so what do they do about it?

I don't have this problem, as I use the back ports for speakers, the front post for headphones and the toslink for hi-fi. That way the only switch I need is in software.

I use the back for both, clearly creating the problem frown. I try to avoid using the front ports to keep the PC 'clean' !

Anyway, I've ordered one of the little thingamajigs, we'll see what's what when it arrives.
