Line Stats

[link to this post]

Move in a few weeks back to a new property which (as the crow flies) is less than a mile to the telephone exchange.

Here are my stats:

DSL Connection

Link Information

Uptime: 4 days, 0:57:58
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,144 / 4,189
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 17.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 33.0 / 57.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 6.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 1 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 8 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 1,284 / 1,152,019
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 1,284 / 5,029
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 3,342 / 3,463

Started off at 4.5meg then dropped a few days ago to 4.1 (pretty much exactly 10 days after connecting).

Normally I remove all internal extension wiring and fit an ADSL faceplate to the master socket.

There is just a grey openreach box outside and the developers have no idea how the internal wiring is managed (even though they put it in).

I am assuming the line comes in from the exchange to the Openreach box then all other extensions are connected from there.

Firstly, can I go into this box myself or is that one of BT's no nos?

Secondly, as per my previous experiences (all properties previously were at around 1meg and jumped to between 4 and 6 when extensions disconnected), will disconnecting all extensions apart from the one the router is connected to, help improve the speed?

We have Sky but I have no conscience in completely disconnecting it from the phone line so the only internal extension needed is the one th router is connected to.

At the moment, Sky is double filtered along with some panasonic DECT phones which on the same extension as the router are double filtered.

The router is a 585v7.

Any help most appreciated.

Ok I threw caution to the wind and opened up the box.

Exchange comes in from the left and internal wire to the right.

However, the house has 5 phone sockets and only three wires are connected with the orange (I am assuming) being the bell wire.

I am assuming I can cut the bell wire?

Also, if there are 5 phone points inside the house, I am at a loss as to how they are connected.

Do I assume they are all connected in serial from one socket to the other? If this is the case and I locate the first socket, would I see incoming and outgoing (to the next socket) wires?

If this is the case, can I just disconnect the outgoing set and thus loose all extensions in the property (desirable) apart from the first one in the series?

I am also assuming the first one in the series will be the closest socket to the Openreach box. It is the only one on the ground floor with two more on the first floor and two more on the second floor.

The "grey box" sounds like the new style external master (where all internal sockets would be slaves/extensions).
You cannot (obviously) fit an ADSL filtered face-plate or a i-Plate to it, so the only avenue open is to remove the ring wires (you are perfectly able to do this as all the sockets are in your domain).

If the sockets are wired in a chain (starting at the first socket) you could always swap that one for a filtered face-plate (not the one for the NTE5 master, but a normal size square face-plate) such as the Solwise ADSL Filtered BT/RJ11 Faceplate (about half way down the page, under "ADSL Extension") and connect the rest of the sockets to the filtered output (this would be the next best thing and is virtually equivalent to having a filtered face-plate on an NTE5).

Thanks for the reply smile

I managed to find this:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/5576709/Openreach-New-Site...

Then checked out the extensions and they are wired in serial.

So, I plan first of all to remove the ring wire, but, is that the orange wire? If so then i will just snip it off at the Openreach box on the customer side and then at each extension, making sure it does not end up touching any other wire.

I will see what that does then most likely take disconnect the second extenson from the first which will then take out all the others.

Just need to establish that the ring wire is actually the orange one first.

Yes it's the one connected to terminal 3.
You really only have to disconnect it from the first socket in the series.

Ok, a bit of a nightmare situation.

I removed the orange bell wire from connector 3 in the openreach box, then from the first extension removed both orange wires.

Put the faceplate back on and got what sounded like an engaged one when trying to make a phone call.

Had a fiddle to make sure all other wires were firmly in place, regained the dial tone, then logged on to the router and my speed has dropped to less than 2meg frown

Anyone able to help or will it just settle and go back up again soon?

Here are the new router stats after removing the bell wire:

Uptime: 0 days, 0:02:30
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,148 / 1,860
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 14.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 33.0 / 56.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 7.0 / 6.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 379
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 4
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 4,638 / 2

And, here are the event logs following the reboot:

Sounds like the wires are loose, you only need numbers 2 and 5 connected but they have to be connected.

I have a Krone tool lying around and re-established connection since and am now certain they are fully connected.

Anything else I can try?

Your power is lower
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 14.0

Did you check the wiring in the outside box?

Did you try another filter?

Have you got a spare router?
