16MBit Connection but only 300K downloads?

[link to this post]

I connected to Be on Wednesday and since then the router has been connected at around 16MBits but downloads from fast servers have been on average 300Kb/sec.

I phoned technical support and they blamed it on traffic but that isn't the reason.

I have another ADSL2+ connection at another address slightly further from the exchange and that connects at 11MBits and I get downloads from the same servers as I used for Be at 1.2MB/Sec.

Photo of my line stats are below (taken using my iPhone):

I would appreciate any suggestions that could be useful when I call Be back to sort this out. I have connected the router to the test socket and microfilters are on all Sockets.

Thanks.

Is this via ethernet or over wireless?

This is over Ethernet (though that page capture was over wireless).

How do I find the server? As I can't see any mention of it. Thanks.

Well, you're the one downloading from them, I assumed you would know.

I thought u meant as in which server on Be was I connected to as UK Online have more than one.

I was downloading from Microsoft.com and downloading iTunes from Apple.com

both Maxed out my UK Online connection at 1.2MB/Sec but the Be connection were at max 300-500KB/Sec at the same time.

I'm getting 1.3MBps from microsoft.com. Maybe your network settings need to be optimised?

That's a fair few errors building up very quickly!!

Might be worth running the router from the NTE5 test socket under the cover of your BT master phone socket - if you still get the same problem then the issue is outside, if not, then your internal wiring might be causing errors on the line wink

What is your ping like, if it is very high it would indicate that there is congestion somewhere, I have previously had 20 meg sync speeds reduced to sub 1meg download speeds on BE for a few days before they re-routed.
But that would be very time of day dependant slowdowns were about 6pm to midnight for me

What operating system, what browser, and what security software do you have running? Do you have BBC iPlayer, ITV net player, 4OD or similar installed and running in the background, or any P2P apps?

Since BE doesn't use PPPoA as most other UK DSL ISPs do; if you've applied any tweaks, then you may need to remove them. For example your MTU on your router needs to be set to 1500, and your MTU on your laptop or desktop should be 1500 or lower (e.g. 1492).

If you're using wireless, you may be getting interference from neighbours; worth trying speed tests using an ethernet cable connection if you can.

I would recommend using this site's speedtest as you can log this and graph. Also use www.speedtest.net as an alternative. Both can run faster than any BE connection.
