bt box and NTE5 Master socket inside house

[link to this post]

I have had to report noise on my phone line on 3 occasions over the last year now,
This also effects my broadband speed i get around 3000kbps
my line syncs at 4000kbps I am approx 600mtrs from my exchange
And it looks like the fault lies with my internal wiring,
I moved into the property in 1986
My bt cable comes through the window recess and firstly terminates into a small bt box
As shown in the picture,

inside.

Then a piece of very old cable goes from this box to my NTE5 master socket
I have looked at many of my friends bt installation but they do not have this box as in the picture but
Instead a cable just comes through and terminates into there NTE5 Master socket,
Bt said they would send someone out from open reach but this would cost me £140
My question is can I legally remove this box as in the picture and connect the wiring directly to my
NTE5 box thankyou for your help.

Legally no.

The box is just a junction between the external cable, which actually looks fairly recent and the internal which is not that old looking at the wire colours. The fact its a BT piper logo means it is post 1984

So long as the phone signal is travelling down a twisted pair it should have no effect on your speeds.

Other than the master socket not in the picture what else wiring wise do you have.

It could be an RF filter. If the OP can remove the top and post a picture, or just look to see if it looks like this or this. There is an RF3 version for use with ADSL.

Thanks for your reply rogan8
here is the inside pick

It just looks like a mess of wires
and I suspect this is affecting my sync rate

Reply to mr saffron

The only other wiring i have is from this box to my NTE5 Master socket
and one filter on the master socket,
I do not have any extensions

It probably isn't

The picture is too out of focus to really tell. If your camera has a macro mode this would be the time to use it.

Ideally the white cable will have the blue with white stripe and white with blue stripe connected to individual connectors, and two wires from the outside cable to corresponding numbers on another block.

The other pairs e.g. orange will be left bundled up and don't carry the phone signal unless you had a second telephone line installed.

it is just a junction box for joining two cables together and looks messy because the wiring has spare pairs.

What are the line sync, attenuation and noise margin figures from the line anyway?

It's not an rf filter.

So If the wire or the small box that leads through the wire to the
NTE5 Master socket is faulty
Do OPENREACH Have to replace or repair it free of charge
As I understand things the customer is only responsable for anything after
the NTE5 Master socket.

BT are trying to frighten me off with warning that OPENREACH would charge
me for any repair to the wiring in the house.
