Hybrid router solution for BT Vision/Talk vs Draytek 2820vn

[link to this post]

Hi

I have just been upgraded to ADSL 2+ and I seem to doing OK at the moment

Previously I had been using a draytek vigor 110 DSL modem into an apple airport extreme 802.11n router,
I also have an express and time capsule around the house extending 802.11n. I get a very
good strong and reliable wifi solution

I'm getting sync at 17063 at the moment (560 m direct about 2km via wire). I have had a bit of trouble with
BTV downloads since the upgrade so I connected the BTV box via ethernet to HH v2 port 1 feeding port 2 from
the airport extreme, still waiting to see if that improves my QoS for BTV during the evening. Previously I wasn't using
anything on the 8M service. Is this method sufficient to configure the HH as a QoS slave for BTV & Talk?
(I get about 10000 to 14000 kbs download on average dropping to about 7-8000 during busy periods, hence
assuming it is a QoS issue)

Alternatively would I improve things significantly if I went for a Draytek Vigor 2820vn to replace the vigor 110 &
apple extreme & HH. I'm looking for a futureproof optimum soln within a less than £200 budget (price of 2820)
that works without me having to think about it from day to day

My reason for using the draytek & apple routers is that being same vendor and software they should work well with apple
products eg OS X and Apple TV - this has proven to be the case, much more reliable than when I used HH v1

Reason I top out at 14000 is that I'm still on a 13000 IP profile, re-synced this morning and went from 15000 to 17000
(my upgrade was last Sunday night)

regards

BTV at SD should only need 2Mbps, you should check to see if it behaves itself when using their supplied hardware, if so then something is wrong in your setup.

Using Port 1 on the HH and port 2 is surely just like an expensive switch. Any QoS it does will be from the WAN modem side to the LAN side. Only time this may be different is on the FTTC HH which has an Ethernet WAN port.

Thanks for the feedback

I have been running BTV & BBTalk for over a year without a HH v1, I got a free HHv2 a couple of months
back to fix some download issues I started having following a BTV upgrade

Now I have the HH slaved to the Airport Extreme and the BT Vision box connected to port 1 on the HH.
Suddenly seems to be working perfectly now, co-incidence? maybe, maybe not

I'll check BB talk tomorrow. It is currently in the DMZ of the Extreme and registered but I got occasional
dropped calls (Siemens Gigaset S685 IP)

PS I should add that the Airport is not a DSL router having only a PPPoE connection and the draytek claims to
be unique as a PPPoE to PPPoA bridge, so maybe that makes a difference?

For info...

As an update in case it is useful to anyone

Over the weekend following a re-organisation of my home network I ended up using the only HH v2 to
connect directly to BB and support my BTV. I found I was getting lots of BTV download issues, stuttering
etc.

Today went back to my original solution everything is working fine inc BB Talk with Siemens Gigaset.
