BT Business Broadband incompetent staff

[link to this post]

Ok, so I've just got off the phone from BT Business Broadband support. All I wanted to do was to have them un-cap line.

Down Up
Rate: 9726 kbs 1166 kbs
Max Rate: 20593 kbs 1164 kbs
Noise Margin: 22.5 dB 5.7 dB
Attenuation: 23.5 dB 10.1 dB
Output Power: 20.9 dBm 12.3 dBm

As shown by these stats we have much wiggle room as should be able to sync at full 20.

Anyway she wanted me to disconnect all Ethernet and wifi connections to see if that was causing the speed problem!?! We have 10-15 machines using network resources. I asked for the 'coach' (manager) but he was hopeless.

Why doesn't BT Business Support know the difference between running as speed test and the sync rate? Anyone else had a similar issue where by BT don't understand their own product?

Kieran.

How long since you rebooted the router? That looks like a connection made during a thunderstorm or similar electrical noise occurrence.

I reckon the router was faulty and kept dropping connection thus the sync rate lowered and SNR margin went up. Received a new one which works fine.

That's not the issue though. The support team seem to have no understanding of what the customer requires.

The cap you refer to is not normally implemented by BT but is set within the modem itself. A power down and reboot should sort it out.

But before you do that can you access the DSL diagnostics and capture a screen shot - easier than trying to format the details. The page can be found at: http://{IP address}/xslt?PAGE=C_5_3 {Ip address} = 192.168.0.1 or whatever you router is assigned. Or go to te router home page, select <SETTINGS>; <Diagnostics>; DSL

The maximum auto setting for the DLM is 15dB. I believe it can be manually set to 18dB. To get to 22.5dB has to be an incident, unless as you say the line is capped at a maximum sync. But that's a very strange cap speed.

I managed to get put through to someone useful after the third attempt. He had a word with the boss who put though a request for the line to be uncapped. They don't seem to have an interface on their machines which allow them to mess around with the line. Strange.

Either way we're now back up to speed with the following:

Modem Type: Built in modem - ADSL
DSL Line (Wire Pair): Line 1 (inner pair)
Current DSL Connection:
Down Up
Rate: 20957 kbs 1172 kbs
Max Rate: 20833 kbs 1176 kbs
Noise Margin: 5.8 dB 6.0 dB
Attenuation: 23.4 dB 10.1 dB
Output Power: 20.9 dBm 12.3 dBm

Protocol: G.DMT2+ Annex A
Channel: Fast
DSLAM Vendor Information Country: {46336} Vendor: {IFTN} Specific: {48753 }
ATM PVC: 0/38

Rate Cap: 20833 kbs
Attenuation @ 300kHz: 23.4 dB
Uncanceled Echo: -15.8 dB Ok
VCXO Frequency Offset: -69.5 ppm Ok
Final Receive Gain: 17.4 dB Ok
Excessive Impulse Noise: 0 Ok

Set by the modem in most cases not by the DLM.

It is based on sync speed &c at the time of re-sync. The max rate that is shown is what could be achieved if the line was to resync and settle.

The max. speed router reckons on line:
Max Rate: 20833 kbs 1176 kbs
which either is not an exact calc. as it is lower than actual speed, 20957 kbs, or it is adjusting for NM being 0.2 dB below norm.
