kb or Kb = kilobits, see your connection speed, (some routers call it bandwidth), and the speed reported by speed testers - sometimes expressed in Mb, megabits.
kB or KB = kiloBytes, the speed reported by most download programs. A Byte is one character of data and is what file sizes are measured in, so Bytes/kBytes/MBytes are a more sensible measure than the bit speed. for these programs. Kbps/Mbps is more sensible for speed testers, see the next paragraph.
One Byte is eight bits in the systems we are talking about, though on some computer systems a Byte can be a different number of bits. The reason it can be different is that there are many different character sets and many ways of holding them, but the essential property of a byte is that it holds one character.
