Infinity and no street cab?

[link to this post]

Seems in my new flat I'm fed via a distribution point in the car park, and no street cab, and my line goes straight back to the exchange.

I'm about 1.8km from the exchange, and lost about 4mbps sync speed when I moved across the road from another flat.

Are we ever likely to see Infinity if there's no street cab?

Possibly via FTTP, which doesn't use the street cab. Give the post code, preferably in the Fibre Broadband forum, and you may find someone can say if it is on the FTTP schedule or not.

Definite no to any FTTC type product - it cannot originate in an exchange.

However, are you sure there is no cabinet? Runs from the exchange can be long but 1.8 km is quite far - although it depends on how many flats there are. With a block of 50 to 100 there might be a dedicated 100 or 200 pair cable but for just a few fed from a "distribution point" there could well be a cabinet a little further back.

The Openreach engineers that have visited have all confirmed there's no cab, as when I reported noise on the line they were surprised as the line went straight back to the exchange.

I don't understand why they didn't put their equipment in the locked room in the car park though with the DP, and have that act as a cab, but there's probably about 600 flats in this development and it's a shame that BT and the developers don't seem to think of these things and do things properly.

Thanks for the info though!

For 600 flats then yes it could be several large cables going all the way back.

If there is a locked (and secure facility) with power available then there is no reason why the equipment could not be installed. There will need to be fibre run out to the estate but once that is there it could be achieved.

The challenge would be to find the right contact in BT to approach. If you have 100 or 200 potential customers then they may listen.

Take a look at what Openreach is starting to do in Docklands, i.e. FTTB (Building/Basement) then VDSL2 over existing copper in the building.

It will depend on co-operation from the owner of the block.

Also full fibre to the flat might be feasible via people like Hyperoptic, if enough interest from people in each block.

That is what I was suggesting ...

A cabinet does not need to be a Green Box in the street, it can be a room in the building.

Yes I seem to be in the same position too. There are no cabinets over a whole peninsular that juts into the Thames. Area was built up from dereliction in the 80s. The exchange is around 4.6km as the crow flies. I've often wondered if that meant no infinity.
