Line stats - opinions please

[link to this post]

Hi All,

I've been experiencing some issues over the past month with constant router reboots and my sync speed getting lower and lower. I made contact with BT a couple of nights ago and they agree there's a fault on my line and that they were going to reset my profile. I believe they have reset it but I don't think this has resolved the underlying issue. I believe there is a further problem with the line given my noise margin and output power for downstream. I'm expecting a call from them tonight but would welcome the forums thoughts on whether you agree that my constant re-syncs are due to Noise and Power issues on the line?

ADSL
Type G992_3_A
Modem Status Showtime
Downstream
Data Rate(Kbps) 5104
Noise Margin 0.0
Output power 0.0
Attenuation 49.3

Upstream
Data Rate(Kbps) 1027
Noise Margin 5.6
Output power 12.7
Attenuation 27.5

Further info - I don't have a BT test socket and I replaced the filter a couple of weeks ago

If output power really was zero there would be no signal.

Looks more like a bug in the routers interface. What router do you have?

How many phone sockets in the property? And what is connected to them?

Thanks for the reply:-

I'm using a Belkin - F5D8635-4v1

There's 2 phone sockets in the house - 1 x upstairs and 1 x downstairs

Upstairs socket isn't used for anything. Downstairs has the filter with phone and router connected

I was using the homehub v2 up until about a month ago but it kept resetting too. Thought the router was the issue which is why I swapped out to the Belkin but now I'm not so sure.

Get the stats out of the HomeHub v2 should show the noise margin properly then.

Have you opened up your sockets and removed the wire that is connected to pin 3 - this is the ring wire and can cause resyncs

Did you buy a new phone at some time and that is when the trouble started? Or anything else electrical or electronic. Including replacements of anything.

Brain power failure today?

The power will be in dBm and 0dBm is 1mW ... rather low compared to 20dBm normally seen but there is still power there!

OK, stats from Homehub 2:-

Downstream 4,599 Kbps
Upstream 963 Kbps

ADSL settings
VPI/VCI 0/38
Type PPPoA
Modulation ITU-T G.992.3
Latency type Interleaved
Noise margin (Down/Up) 5.9 dB / 5.9 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 44.5 dB / 26.8 dB
Output power (Down/Up) 0.0 dBm / 12.9 dBm

Not sure if an output power of 0.0 is an issue but at least it shows noise margin
