Massive speed increase

[link to this post]

BT emailed me to say "On 15-Mar-12, we’ll be upgrading your local exchange to give you a better broadband service. You should get an improved, more consistent connection, and your speed might improve too."

"speed might improve" was an understatement. My speed has jumped from around 6.4 Mbps to 15.4 Mbps.

According to BT the upgrade is part of ongoing network improvements and is not BT Infinity.

We are due to get FTTC by the end of the month but the nearest cabinet to me has not been changed yet.

I'm curious to know what may have been changed in my local exchange to account for this welcome speed increase. Any ideas? The exchange is Nairn NSNAI.

It's probable that your exchange was not WBC enabled (21CN) until recently. Once enabled, users are moved from the 20CN kit to the new 21CN kit in batches.

So you are now on ADSL2+ instead of ADSL. Has your upstream risen a lot as well?

Thanks for the info RobertoS. If I get a further speed boost when my cabinet is upgraded to FTTC I'll be even more happy.

?
FTTC is something you have to order. You don't get it just because your cabinet has been upgraded. I've got more explanation about it on this page.

It's a new product range altogether, and with nearly every ISP costs more. That page has one under it, with a link to a spreadsheet with summaries of several ISPS' offerings.

Thank you again RobertoS. I had not realised that the old cabinet and connections will remain when the new cabinet is installed. Still happy though smile
