SNR margin reset

[link to this post]

I've tried getting this reset with the online live chat and gotten nowhere fast. Does anyone have any tips on how to get the margin reset. It's currently sat at 20dB and a sync rate of 416Kbps.

Thanks

How long since you disconnected and reconnected?

I reset the router last night for a friend it resync'd at the same speed. I did an online chat with someone with an unpronounceable name online I asked for the target noise margin to be reset he said i'll look into that for you, disappeared off, I asked what was happening he replied briefly then another 5 mins went by and he ended the chat session cutting me off frown harrumph!

It doesn't sound like a BT Wholesale-based connection then. Is it LLU, and which ISP?

It's a VERY rural exchange with 950 residential premises slung off the back of it and the person concerned is a BT broadband customer so nope definitely "plain vanilla ADSL" via BT, well unless BT have done something very secret in this exchange wink

Have you got a spare router you could try?

The margin immediately after connection should be a multiple of 3dB, give or take 0.5dB. 20dB is not a valid setting, unless someone has been playing with the router or it is faulty.

The highest the system assigns is 15dB. I think BT Wholesale can set it to 18dB, but I could be wrong. Higher than that straight after a reconnection is distinctly odd.

It's a BT home hub. I've ordered a pre-filtered face plate for them, once i've got that i'll take one of my old faithful Speedtouch 585v6's round there and have a play with it.

Yeah it's distinctly nasty this one, took over an hour to download 100MB of Avira antivirus last night.

TBH i'm reaching the point where i'm going to suggest they get a MAC and migrate to AAISP as at least i'll stand a chance of getting it fixed then.

All very strange, weirdest fault i've seen for a long time

Looks like you have a problem similar to mine. On a rural market1 exchange.
getting 284K down on SNR 18 with Attenuation 37. Believe 18 is max BT will allow.
Like you asked for reset ISP reluctant to do. Wants to arrange engineer visit.
Added Filter Plate, tested from NTE5 socket. No difference to stats.
ISP saying caused by noise on line. Quiet Line test has revealed nothing.
Do you have any sync problems in logs.
It is frustrating as always upto you to be pro active.ISP just sit on hands and pocket money.
Have you?
dialled 17070 Option 2 to check if there is any noise.
www.speedtester.bt.com to check connection speeds and stats.
www.bt.com for line check to see if there is a fault
Just as an aside have you experience any Website Time out Problems?

Reckon that's summat up with the line. Time for the OP to keep on at BT to get a boost visit, once the issue is resolved, the engineer can do the snr reset.
