Always says New Customers Only on BT products and others. Avoids any problems.
Is Unlimited truly Unlimited. BT Mail offer says "Fair Usage Policy" applies in T and C.

So, BT changed the 40GB package to unlimited.

No, the packages are still the same. BT Total Broadband Option 2 had a 40GB allowance and still does. The newer package BT Unlimited Broadband is unlimited, but that doesn't "replace" the older packages for legacy customers.

The 40GB usage package is still offered as an existing product.
Offered ... existing? Do you mean the 40GB package still exists for existing custs? The only offering done by BT today is to new custs of either 10GB or Unlimited ADSL packages.

It is offered to me. I don't suppose I am special when it comes to being an existing BT customer.

AIUI, as with most ISPs, although the unlimited packages replace otherwise identical ones except for the removal of the usage caps, it is necessary to upgrade to the replacement. That upgrade normally restarts whatever minimum term applies.

It doesn't happen automatically.

Thatís where the confusion lies, my friend and myself thought that the upgrade would happen automatically! Thanks for the clarification.

The only issue though it though when you ring up to move to the unlimited package is that they treat this as another 12 month contract. For myself it was not an issue as I had 11 months to run anyway. The package was also cheaper then what I was paying previously as well.

You are confusing the BT current offering of 40GB BT Infinity 1 with the previous now legacy 40GB ADSL BT Total BB, which is the subject under discussion.
