BT HH4 vs Billion 7800 DXL

[link to this post]

I have no choice for broadband as I live in a rural area, so I have BT and get about 2.5-3Mb download speeds.

As I have two growing kids, this is becoming less and less viable. I was looking at Satellite but before I go down that route (I am aware of the lagging issues), I thought I would try and speed up what I already have.

I have a HH4 so the only stats I believe I can get are as follows (from the HH4 Event log)

17:30:55, 28 Apr. ( 76.250000) DSL noise margin: 19.00 dB upstream, 6.30 dB downstream
17:30:55, 28 Apr. ( 76.110000) DSL line rate: 448 Kbps upstream, 3616 Kbps downstream

I am thinking of getting a Billion 7800DXL as it allows SNR tweaking however I am not sure how much I could tweak this connection.

So the question is, based on the limited info available, will the Billion provide enough of a boost to be worth the cost (£130ish) ? Or... am I getting as good as I can get ?

Thanks in advance

Matt

How much are Netgear 834Gv4 (not 1,2,3 or 5!), 834GT (any), 834PN (any) on eBay? Good ADSLx routers with tweakable Broadcom chipsets.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 58.7/14.6Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

Also easy to get full router stats from.

I paid £18.50 on eBay for a NetGear DG834GT / WG311T Wired Router with adapter.

Ok these are more detailed stats I've managed to get using a different router than the BT HH. I am on an ADSL Max product (up to 8MB)

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB) 6.4 19.0
Attenuation (dB) 50.0 30.5
Output Power (dBm) 19.3 12.3
Attainable Rate (Kbps) 4736 948
Actual Rate (Kbps) 3936 448

Does this mean that I could get 4.7Mb at a real push ?

Speed tests don't look any quicker than they were.. still around 2.75Mb. Shouldnt that have gone up ?

New stats below (SNR set to 3)
Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB) 2.9 18.0
Attenuation (dB) 50.5 30.5
Output Power (dBm) 19.8 12.3
Attainable Rate (Kbps) 5256 948
Rate (Kbps) 4576 448

On ADSL Max with a fairly low percentage increase in connection speed it can take up to five days for the IP Profile to adjust upwards to match. The IP Profile for 4576kbps is 4000kbps. On 3936kbps it was 3000kbps.
