Routing issues on BT?

[link to this post]

Hi,

I was having issues connecting to my server last night and the trace routes looks to have shown a problem with BT's network?

Last night:
6 16 ms 16 ms 239 ms core2-hu0-1-0-1-1.colindale.ukcore.bt.net [195.99.127.9]
7 226 ms 207 ms 16 ms core4-hu0-1-0-1.faraday.ukcore.bt.net [195.99.127.50]

This morning:
6 261 ms 16 ms 16 ms core2-hu0-1-0-1-1.colindale.ukcore.bt.net [195.99.127.9]
7 176 ms 16 ms 16 ms core4-hu0-1-0-1.faraday.ukcore.bt.net [195.99.127.50]

What problem are you seeing with those trace routes? The occasional high response could just be that the router has better things to do and is not prioritising the ping. It is only if hops after that are consistently high that it would cause any concern.

Generally it is because the routers are busy with other things so not normally a cause for concern unless later hops have consistently got higher latency caused by routing issues. What sort of problems were you seeing to start you investigating the issue?

Could well have been one of the BT interconnects running hot but would need to see a full tracert to see if that helps with diagnosis (which it may not, tracert is a limited diagnostic tool). If you are worried about it giving away details of your server then remove the server name/IP information from any significant links but keep the actual response times.

I was getting ftp slow downs, slow page loads and missing images on bbc.co.uk this morning for 30 mins or so, no issues this end... righted itself. Using OpenDNS.
