Youtube buffering on Ipad (BT Infinity 1)

[link to this post]

I have switched from Sky Fiber to BT Infinity 1 officially around 3 weeks ago.

I use my ipad to watch video clips on youtube via the app, everyday.

When I was with Sky, watching videos on youtube (app) was smooth, no buffering on my ipad.

But since I switched to BT, I have problems every time I watch youtube videos on my ipad. Long buffering, stop start, sometimes the app even says no connection when the light on the homehub is still blue. I have done speedtest with my phone when that happened. The download/upload speed was fine (20+ down, 5+up).

Does anyone else experience the same thing? What is the solution please? Cheers.

Which hub did you have on sky?

Firstly change your wifi channel on 2.4ghz and 5ghz

http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14094...

Try out the 5Ghz network first, should be faster. It will show as a -5 network now.

ukhardy,
Unfortunately, don't know which hub it was with sky as the hub was probably 2 years old now.
I will try changing the channel tonight and see if it helps.
Cheers.

Oh yes, but that doesn't necessarily mean that will resolve this issue. It could be a line issue which would just transfer itself over. Yes, it's quite likely that it could be a wireless issue, but to suggest to the OP to move back to his original ISP, especially after he's just moved from them, isn't advisable. They've moved for a reason. Anyway, he's specifically said that he can't move back.

Likely their single band 2.4Ghz router. The SmartHub is dual band, so you might find the 5Ghz signal is a little on the weak-side and causing issues. When you follow my steps above, try out a new wifi channel, it will also make you split the bands.

Check out both the 2.4ghz network and the -5 network smile I find the 5Ghz works better for me, but only when I have good range. The Sky Hub likely did not support 5Ghz at all ie would just be the other 2.4Ghz signal.

A speed test http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest and post the results link might help...

e.g. if the tbbx1 test is slow and graph bumpy it suggests an issue, particularly if httpx6 is a good straight line

To know if its the Wi-Fi you need to test on another device that has Ethernet.

Some devices have a tendency to hop between 2.4 and 5GHz, so suggestions to name the channels differently might help e.g. I've done this and the phone only knows about the 5GHz credentials to stop it wandering around

Also different routers have different antenna so it sounds odd but rotating or moving the router a little might help, i.e. finding optimum orientation for where you use iPad the most.

Another possibility is that with older iOS the iPad was happy, but there have been versions of iOS where people have reported issues after upgrades so its possible that the Wi-Fi is fine and the iPad is playing around.

Thank you all.
I have just followed the instructions and spilt the bands, then changed the channel for the 5ghz.
I will see how it goes.

I didn't notice this yesterday.
In the list of WiFi network available, I now have the network as it was before, but also an additional network with the same name but with '-5' at the end. Which should i choose?

The -5 one is faster but at further range the signal may be lower than the other network, and hence it may cause the buffering you experienced at a distance.

Your sky hub likely did not support 5Ghz at all, so would have mirrored the non -5 network.

The 5 GHz (-5 one in posters naming) should be less prone to interference from other neighbouring networks too.

Yup. The smarthub forces it to be -5 at the end of the SSID, I must say I every 5ghz channel 36, 40, 44, 48 are all occupied by 2+ other networks now where I live. HH6 does not support any other channels. 36 is by far the worse, with 6 Sky networks, great idea (not) that Sky send their routers fixed to 36!

In my office, we have 20+ networks on each of the channels (other than my corp network). So much so, plenty have fallen down to 20Mhz instead of 80.

The problem that I was facing regarding the buffering, I was literally next to the smarthub, so can't be a distance issue.

Hah, I did change the channel to 36 for the 5gHz yesterday. I guess I better change it to another channel then...LOL

I will probably try using the -5 network, do speedtest and see what difference it makes.

Sometimes being right next to the transmitter can cause its own problems. Step back a few feet.

5ghz does appear faster, though about the same between different channels.
If it doesn't make youtube buffering, I think I will stay on this -5 network.
Brilliant.

If next to the hub almost certainly a 2.4ghz issue, and likely can be fixed by switching the channel on this... or as you have done using the -5 network will fix it also smile

I'd imagine there are the same sort of (free) utilities available for the Ipad etc that are available for Android/ Windows. I downloaded one on to the smartphone and that told me what wifi was in use around me, signal strength and more importantly what channels were in use. Even recommended what channel to use. As mentioned, 36 seems to be nigh on everywhere

Strange enough.
I think I still get the buffering issue with -5. A lot better than before though.
And with 2.4ghz, I have had no issue so far even though I have not changed channel for 2.4

Probably depends on the smartphone but have a look on the app store and search for something like "wifi analyser" (or analyzer). You'll probably see a few free options - give some of them a try (after looking at reviews of course).

If you’re having buffering issues on multiple devices on 5Ghz something is probably a miss with the router.

Also yes channels any higher have mixed performance due to DFS so BT did away with them. Also every other ISP router sticks to the lower channels out of the box as well.
