We have also just received the email from BT too, stating that if we renew our contract we keep our current price we are already paying now before the price rise in Jan 2018.

Just to further the discussion

I have not had a price rise email yet (it's now 11th December)
I found something on Martin Lewis's website saying:
BT has confirmed that customers who joined on an introductory or promotional broadband deal from 4 August 2017 won't see their monthly broadband prices go up during their fixed deal...

I called BT to ask about this
They didn't know why I hadn't received a price rise email
They didn't know anything about this "4 August" (possible) rule

They did offer to recontract me for 18 months from now to lock in my current price
I am considering the offer

I have two BT lines - each have different account numbers - got an e-mail for one account, not the other. When I rang up and questioned this the customer service guy sent out the e-mail for my second account again(they claimed it had already been sent) and it popped up in my Gmail account after about a minute.

Had to phone BT due to the link in the email returned a 404 page not found error code when it redirects after logging into BT.

After 27 mins wait in the queue and 5 mins talking to the nice lady at BT I got our monthly bill reduced by 33% so I am happy, granted I had to renew for another 18 Months for it, but for this price I cannot moan.

So win win.

I still have not received anything from BT!
What's the legal standing if I don't receive a price rise email?
Are they allowed to increase the price?

I have my suspicions that you are still in contract? we got the email not long after we became out of contract and we started paying the normal price.

Yes I'm in contract since end Aug 2017 for 12 months
They can increase the price as long as they notify you - and you can leave for free

As an update to this thread:

- I've spoken to 6 different people at BT about this now
- each person kept giving me a different answer as to whether my price would be going up or not
- they couldn't seem to send me the price rise email

From the latest guy at BT complaints:
- BT admitted that they never sent me an email, apparently their email system doesn't work very well
- they are in fact putting my price up, and have given me 5 days notice of this now (told me on 2nd Jan, price rise 7th Jan)


Can they legally increase my price with 5 days notice?
And can I report them to Ofcom?

Do you pay by direct debit? They are meant to give notice of variations in the value of the direct debit and the guarantee can be useful for those times when firms mess up like this.

The legal scenario would need someone with expertise in consumer law, and Ofcom even if they take a dim view won't do anything to help you at this point.
