Worth upgrading HH3 to other router or another HH ?

[link to this post]

one reason to change the HH3 is the fact it needs the openreach modem as well for the connection.
I can free up a mains socket to use and probably save power?

what is the best option?

I'm well out of contract... (years out) got infinity2

connection is stable too.

Definitely worth upgrading the 3 .......

(much) Improved wireless. The built in VDSL modem on the linked product will out perform your current VDSL modem, all good stuff.

When I moved over to BT in January they sent me a HH4 (ADSL not VDSL). I soon encountered random reboots and other issues which many have reported. Many recommend TP-Link products which work fine. I ended up with a Billion 8800NL R2 (£60 ish) which is working fine and even gives me IPv6 which the HH4 (and certainly not your HH3) does not. Both the TP and Billion ones are dual VDSL/ADSL.

I bought a HH6 from auction site. Better wireless coverage than my HH5 and IPv6 as well.
Plug in and go, never had a problem so far.

Lots on offer take your pick!

Depends on Budget

TP-Link are very good, Billion, ZyXEL are other well respect names.

Just make sure it's a VDSL router!

People have poor experiences with the Home Hubs from BT, only thing is.. that's all they will support via the phone.

My HH3 has been pretty rock solid for the several years I have used it with maybe a reboot needed occasionally after months of a 24/7 connection.

If you want the very best modem/router and don't mind paying for it then one of the Netgear D7800, Billion 8900AX, Asus DSL-AC88U or TP Link VR2800 will give you top class performance (all are 4 stream) a million miles away from the Home Hub 3.

However if you don't want to spend too much then something link the Netgear D6400, Billion 8800NL or Tp Link VR900v2 will still beat the HH3 for performance. Stay away from Zyxel routers as the wifi range on them is nothing special and they're not cheap either.

I currently have the Huawei HG612 - do you think this is good enough for now? I'm concerned that as it's pretty old, it would die soon.

Assuming it does, what is a good modem out there? I don't need WiFi as I have UniFi USG & WiFi networking set up already. Just a modem...

Thanks,

Iím no longer on a vdsl2 service but until I was last year , I was always using the HG612 as a modem. Despite its age, itís still very solid. It might not give you the highest sync rate but stability wise itís great. If youíre looking for an alternative, then I would recommend something like the Draytek 130 but if it ainít broke..

same here.
looking to have the modem in the router, instead of the separate openreach modem.
power saving, and freeing a socket in my room, which is my music studio too.

will also take a look at the routers suggested.
thanks all.

Had problems with the Billion 8800 R2, kept loosing its settings for some reason, sent it back to the Amazon Seller for refund.
Went for TPLink VR900 instead and works a dream, ok it hasn't got all the bells and whistles of the Billion, but is does a good job none the less. iv6 works fine.

got the netgear d7800
had to return the one they sold me originally, as it was the r7800, which doesn't have a modem as part of it.
went for the expensive one, as I'll use it to host my files, which the computer that is my server will be retired.
and I need performance when I'm DJing online and loading tracks from the drive that will be connected to it.

any quirks I should know when setting it up?

thanks all for the input.

Just ensure the firmware on the D7800 is up to date, other than that you don't need to change anything else.

You're getting internet through wifi but not through any of the 5 LAN ports on the D7800? If so, try a router reboot and as a last resort a factory reset and router reconfig.

home hub 3 Wi-Fi was rubbish so I added an asus access point over Ethernet so the printer my dad has that has only Wi-Fi to connect.

once I removed the hh3 somehow the Ethernet connections were seeing the access point as the gateway. so I just got the access point's error page.
unplugged the access point to see if the printer could see the router directly (appears so and is connected but not tested)
now the access point isn't there all Ethernet see the router as the gateway now. and can access the internet.
