21cn routing - STCFORD

[link to this post]

I'm on STCFORD (6 miles north of Southampton) - ish

A traceroute to the bbc takes around 21ms - a little longer than was the case with O2. Not really a problem, but I was interested in what the routing here was wrt 21cn topology

In particular is the node "acc1-10GigE-0-7-0-4.bm.21cn-ipp.bt.net" Birmingham?
This would be the 21cn core node?
But dual parented from the metro node -- though it seems my traffic ALWAYS gets routed this way?
Presumably my metro node is Southampton?
this would be one parent for my tier1 location? Though that could be southampton also

I'm guessing the topology is somewhat secret? But if it's not I was intrigued on where STCFORD fttc traffic goes off to wink

I check pings regularly. For first time it's dropped to 18ms - consistently.

So pretty similar at least in terms of subnets.

No complaints, wonder if it will stick -- just some BT core optimization. If so, cool!

Ok, odd - no sooner to I post that and we're back to 20ms.

Now my pings are usually rock solid on wired -- absolutely zero jitter. Getting a few bursts tonight. I wonder if they're doing network maintainance...

And now back to 18ms.

Of course this really makes no difference to me, just intrigued. Never seen this shift in months. Not convinced this is line retraining, more likely core.first hop same as usual

BT do what they like really. If they can take down my 10Gig cct without telling me it shuold of been covered under a PEW nothing catches me out any more.

As for a map - there is one somewhere on the net of the 21cn core and T1,2&3 nodes.

If the line was re-training you would have a LoS event and drop sync and PPP to the network. What you describe looks more like BT related works, or there ever changing routing.

That's better than mine. I used to get 13ms to the BBC before BT changed something for the worse.

Here is a tracert now:

15 26 ms 26 ms 26 ms bbc-vip013.cwwtf.bbc.co.uk [212.58.246.92]

(Nether Stowey exchange: WWNETH)

To be completely honest, BT have the worst and slowest routing I have ever seen!

It's pathetic.

Compare RobertoS's tracert to ours:

It takes about 1ms to get from RobertoS's 2nd hop to his 8th hop (www.bbc.net.uk).

It takes around 13ms to get from our 2nd hop to the 15th hop (www.bbc.net.uk).

It's interesting to see that the OP (On a 21CN exchange) is getting around the same trip time to the BBC as me on a 20CN exchange.

Back on topic: BT probably route us everywhere before our packets get to the appropriate server.

It's useless...
