Percent Lines and Uplift

[link to this post]

I have seen a spreadsheet on postcodes to local cabinets which gives various pieces of information. Here's some examples of postcodes associated with a local cabinet that doesn't have Infinity. What does percent lines and uplift mean/indicate?

Percent Lines
100
19.69
51.51
12.12
16.66
100
2.38

Uplift
4.11
3.09
2.8
3.17
1.81
1.81
3.09

Percent Lines is the percentage of lines for the postcode in question that are served by that particular PCP.

Uplift is a vague marketing metric, not particularly meaningful, but basically it means that an average customer whose current typical speed (note it is not specified, could be sync, could be throughput, definitely downstream) is N kbps will see an (uplift x N) kbps typical speed when the line is converted to VDSL (a.k.a. FTTC).

The spreadsheet shows the percentage of addresses at that post code which are, or could be, connected to that cabinet. Some cabinets serve several post codes, and some post codes are split between two or more cabinets.

So some cabinets show things like:-

CAB1
P(ost)C(ode)1 - 100%
PC2 - 100%
PC3 - 27%
PC4 - 35%

You may then find PC3 is also served by one or more other cabinets, so:-

CAB2
PC3 - 73%
PC5 - 100%

and CAB4
PC6 - 100%
PC4 - 12%

Which is tough luck for the remaining 53% at PC4.

That any help, thicky tongue smile ?

Am I being thick wink
I doubt it. smile

What it shows is that N% of the telephone lines for the postcode of interest are connected through that particular PCP.

Fictitious examples:

(1) Postcode AB1 2YZ is found in the database linked with PCP13 and shows a "percentage lines" value of 100.
Meaning: all existing telephone lines for the AB1 2YZ postcode area are connected via PCP13.

(2) Postcode CD3 4WX is found in the database linked with PCP24 and shows a "percentage lines" value of 63.
Meaning: sixty three percent of the existing telephone lines for the CD3 4WX postcode area are connected via PCP24 (and the other 37% of the existing lines are connected via another PCP).

Does that help?

Thank you. Got it. It's filled an important blank in the 'picture' on my area. Where I thought one cabinet supplied the whole group of postcodes around me there are in fact 6 other cabinets sharing certain postcodes. Some streets are lucky and parts of those streets have FTTC!!
