21C WBC ADSL2+ Complete national Roll out.

[link to this post]

It appears that BT have sent that they will replace all remaining IPstream exchanges with WBC by the end of 2018. See.

So how can I find out more precisely when the Trearddur Bay exchange WNTRB will be upgraded?

When I read that news I didn't get the message that ADSL2+ would be installed, just that IPStream would be retired.

I've been told my exchange will never have ADSL2+, but currently my only option is IPStream ADSL Max. Since I can't have FTTC either (I have an EO line), I'm expecting FTTP as the WBC offering to replace ADSL Max.

Who told you that? By the end of 2018, 99.8% of the population will have access to a BT 21CN (WBC) based ADSL2+ service. Unless you live in a remote place such as this I don't see how you're going to be left out.

I can understand why BT would want to upgrade the back haul connections from an exchange, but to install more ADSL equipment *today* in the exchange I cant believe is going to happen. Those close to the exchange/cabinet will get VDSL and anybody currently so far away will not benefit from ADSL2+ compared to the MaxDSL they currently have. Unless the MaxDSL equipment was already ADSL2+ capable and was just never enabled.

Surely on small Market1 exchanges we are trying to move as fast a possible to turn off ADSL and adopt LR-VDSL as quickly as possible.

Maybe they are doing what the providers are asking them to do?

ADSL to ADSL2+ does also double the upload and for those stuck at 0.3 to 0.4 Mbps upload for a decade a jump to 0.7 to 0.8 Mbps is a big difference, plus the way the DLM and IP Profile systems behave

It may be the DSLAM are ok for ADSL2+, but may not be suitable for all the remote management changes that WBC platform involves.

Hi Andy,

Sorry to be a pain - but do you know if Rhydlewis (SWRLS) exchange is on the list to be upgraded? With this news I now have some hope that it may be by the end of 2018 at least!

(It does offer FTTC via some cabinet(s), but I'm on a long-ish EO line).

Many thanks.

Kind regards,

Adam.

The target month was Jan 2017 and looking at the WBC reports, it shows as live for 21CN.

You should be automatically migrated over to ADSL 2+. Who's your ISP?

Hi

There are unfortunately no timescales for your exchange at the moment.

It looks like the EO lines will be moved over to a new cabinet for FTTC, due some point this year. Any ideas your distance to the exchange at the moment?

Thanks, I think I agree. I’ve just found the “National Service Migration Schedules” spreadsheet, dated today.

Current ISP is Sky LLU, but I’m in the 30-day window to break my contract free of charge, hence my surprise that some BTW-using ISPs were quoting me “up to 17”.

Can I ask what cabinet you're on or are you EO?

Only reason I ask is BT are due to upgrade cabinet 15 to FTTC as part of their commercial deployment, cabinet 19 is being privately funded for FTTC and BT are also deploying some FTTP (due around Oct/Nov this year) as part of BDUK Hampshire.

I'm on PCP10, which is extremely close to the exchange. My D-side is about 3km, albeit very good quality copper, hence the 19kbps (with a tweaked target margin). VDSL2 isn't going to do anything good for my speeds.

I know people on PCP15 (and the neighbouring 16, which they're funding as a community). Those poor people have been struggling with lousy speeds and noisy lines since that development was built.

Hi Andy,

Many thanks for the update.

I think my line is currently approximately 4 to 4.3km long - distance from home to exchange, according to the "Broadband Exchange & Line Checker" at http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/broadbandchecker.php, is approximately 4km by road, or 3.15km in a direct line.

I think most (all?) households in our village (Bwlchygroes) are on EO lines of a similar length - so unless they install a new cabinet closer to the village, if it's close to the exchange itself, then it may not be of much help to us in terms of FTTC.

But it's great news that a new FTTC cabinet is possibly on the horizon, at least there's hope for the future. smile

Many thanks once again Andy.

Kind regards,

Adam.

Both my local BDUK and BT have told me that ADSL2+ is not an option for my exchange.

However, I think that is a red herring, as I have seen nothing to suggest that IPStream is being replaced by ADSL2+ - WBC covers more than just ADSL2+, so I expect LR-VDSL, FTTP, FTrN or some other technology to be used.

To be honest, that isn't such an interesting thing as it's migrations for exchanges already 21CN. It's just to move bulk numbers of people over from IP Stream to WBC as IP Stream gets retired.

Well, yes but not only that. For example, my exchange was IPstream-only until November, with migrations starting in December. The spreadsheet shows the service-availability date for recent upgrades and the plan out to April or so, ending with Martin Cross moving to WBC at the end of the month (migrations launched in May).

There's also a column showing the maximum line migration rate, which I imagine is fairly sensitive info.

ISPs can migrate before that date though.

It's actually in their interest to move over as it costs them less in backhaul. IP Stream is fairly outdated and expensive.

CPs can't migrate to WBC until the exchange has 21CN available wink

It's germane for people like me, who until now have had no ADSL2+ options other than the two LLU providers in the exchange (and their wholesale partners). Which eliminates most of the interesting offers that pop up from time to time, such as the current one from Plusnet Business.
