Considering Changing

[link to this post]

Hi,

I've been with Bulldog for several years now. I had a lot of trouble with them for the first year or so, but since then the service has been excellent. I'm quite a heavy user and they never complain, so I'd like to stick with them if I can. However the package I'm on now does seem quite expensive.

I'd like to ask if I need I need to check if I'm under contract for a certain time period and need to got to the end of it before I change and is it worth trying to negotiate a lower price with them and if so, how to go about it.

Thanks,
Joe

2nd ISP - Pipex 512K, then 1Mb
3rd ISP - PlusNet 2Mb, kicked off after being placed on the bad boy pipe
4th ISP - Zen 2Mb. no probs at all.
5th ISP - Bulldog 4Mb then 8Mb, now 18Mb

Using www.samknows.com check which ISPs have unbundled on your exchange (hopefully O2/Be).

As your phone and broadband are likely both with Bulldog/Tiscali, to go to anyone else, you need to return to donor - assuming you moved an existing BT line to Bulldog to start with.

Ring BT, and ask for the "customer options team" and keep insisting that you need this team from the front line people. Once put through ensure you have the options team, and then ask for a Return To Donor for your phoneline.

This will transfer your line back to BT, and you will have telephone service, but no broadband. Once this is done, you can apply for a new broadband service from another provider; you will have to pay any startup fees.

O2/Be are still pretty good; I left bulldog in June 2007, and haven't looked back.

Nice summary of RTD from the earlier respondents, but the OP did not ask about migrating. He asked about changing his tariff.

I was on an old Bulldog tariff (PrimeTime 2000) for £32/month (including phone line). The real speed had long ago already changed to 8MB at all times. After Bulldog became Pipex Homecall, they continued to charge £32/month for the phone line and broadband. I rang them up and said that this seemed expensive in today's market and they immediately reduced the monthly charge to £19.50 including the phone line. I also tried to get some extra services (fixed IP), but they said they cannot change the service at all.

It seems to me the service is frozen, but you can get a price reduction to market rate if you ask. Actually, £19.50 for phone line and unlimited broadband without any throttling is quite good. (I should say that I am still on the C&W network; I was never migrated to the Tiscaly Network).
