Comparison

[link to this post]

I have a Demon HomeOffice 8000 line and an Entanet Max Premium line. At 0815 the speeds via speedtest.bbmax.co.uk were :

Demon : Download Speed: 4555 kbps (569.4 KB/sec ) Upload: 369 kbps (46.1 KB/sec )
Entanet : Download Speed: 5294 kbps (661.8 KB/sec ) Upload: 684 kbps (85.5 KB/sec )

Demon line sync 7232 / 448 Kbps
Entanet 6592 / 832 kbps

Repeat just now (15:10) :-

D: Download Speed: 2432 kbps (304 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 364 kbps (45.5 KB/sec )
E: Download Speed: 5420 kbps (677.5 KB/sec ) Upload: 689 kbps (86.1 KB/sec )

Interesting comparison Yarwell, particularly as both are over the BT IPStream network. Proves the issue really, doesn't it?

Demon have now stated categorically to me that the issue is with congestion/contention, and this is due to lack of purchased capacity on their BT Centrals. I have been told directly that this situation will not be remedied and the ONLY resolution will be to migrate across to their C&W LLU network, however they seem to have stalled the rollout and many exchanges still have no date assigned.

I am taking the matter through OTELO now, to make a ruling on what Demon have to do for my case. I won't go into details here, but I will be moving off Demon as soon as possible as they (and it would appear their new marketing director Matt Cantwell) have decided that customers do not matter; they will still spin their marketing rubbish about UK 24/7 support and superior broadband speeds for Business customers, and people will still get suckered in.

In brief, my discussion with demon went something like this:

Me: So, what's the issue then?
Demon: Network congestion on the BT service
Me: But you've migrated tens of thousands of customers off BT onto C&W
Demon: Yes
Me: So the BT network should be less contended now?
Demon: Yes, it should be, but...
Me: So is there a fault?
Demon: No, it's network congestion/contention
Me: Why? Have you reduced the amount of bandwith you buy off BT?
Demon: Well..... yes.
Me: So, if there are issues with customers speeds, you have dropped too much and need to buy in some more
Demon: Yes, but that won't happen
Me: Why?
Demon: It's a commercial decision
Me: so what's the solution?
Demon: Move over to the C&W network when your exchange is converted
Me: Right, so when will that happen then?
Demon: We have no dates
Me: So, I have no option but to leave?
Demon: No, not really

I hope people who are thinking of moving onto Demon read some of this..... Just DONT DO IT! From a customer of 15+ years.......

lunchtime is usually slow (office surfers ?) :-

Download Speed: 1709 kbps (213.6 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 362 kbps (45.3 KB/sec )

Entanet line is at 3300 so can't totally rule out exchange contention

Update 14:45
Demon 1909 downstream, Entanet 4990

16:50 Demon 1875 downstream
