Video editing software

[link to this post]

While I'm perfectly happy with still photography and photoshop cs3 / lightroom for managing my still work I'm relatively new at video editing so wondering what people recommend...

My needs are simple:-

1. Ability to trim captured video (from a camcorder, hd quality)
2. Ability to stitch multiple videos together
3. Various transitions between the videos
4. Titles and captioning
5. Replace the camcorder audio with some other audio (most of my videos are of our horses so the only noise usually is the background wind noise)
6. Ability to output to various formats - mostly for youtube, burning to dvd or saving for windows mce.

So far like the look of Pinnacle Studio 14 but open to suggestions (While I was happy to spend £600 on Photoshop CS3 that's because I sell some photos, my videos are purely for fun so sub-£100 is more the price range I'm looking at for video editing s/ware)

My PC is reasonable: AMD Athlon Phenom II X940, 6GB of ram, ATI 4870 1 GB GDDR5 video card... so performance isn't too much of an issue - I can always leave the final process till I'm about to hit the sack and leave the pc stewing on it overnight.

Video lengths are anything from a few seconds to upto about 30 mins...

Users are like a virus - each causing a thousand tiny crises until the host finally dies.

I'd second that. Pinnacle Studio Versions 8 & 9 were a nightmare for me. Constant crahses and hangs. I've not had a single problem with Premiere Elements in 4/5 years although I never bothered upgrading past Vers. 3 so I don't know what the latest one is like.

I will also place a vote in favor of Adobe Premiere Elements. I use it and like it.

I notice on here that people are saying Premiere elements, i must admit I have not used Premiere elements, but I have used Premiere and find it is very CPU intensive. I use Vegas by sony, which is a fantastic bit of software a not so heavy on the CPU. Sony do a cheaper studio version.

Type in sony Vegas into your search engine and you can download a evaluation version from their site.

the problem with any editing software like Premiere and Vegas, even the ones for the home users it is still a learning curve.

for simple stuff, the movie editor that comes with windows or the one that is downloaded from windows live may be ok for you.

Pinnacle Studio will do everything that you want and more. It's very simple to use straight out of the box but can be as complex as you wish to go. I've seen from version 9 upwards in use and have heard no reports of the crashes etc mentioned here.
I've only used version 9 and only on a couple of occasions for minimal editing and titling etc purposes and didn't need to look at the help file once.

It must have improved then, I admit I have not used Pinnacle for years, when I did it was a resource hungry unreliable bag of bolts.

I agree with everyone who recommends Adobe Premiere Elements. It integrates well with other Adobe products and iis easy to use, especially as you're familiar with their software.

Avoid Pinnacle and ULead products - like others I have had nothing but trouble with them in the past.

is Premiere Elements ok on resources? It's larger counterpart is pretty heavy on resources,

I don't know the extent to which Premiere Elements uses system resources by comparison with other software but whenever I'm doing any video stuff, I always shut everything else down and end as many processes as I can. I find it pays to be patient though especially when importing large files into a project.

I run it on my HP 3GHz core 2 with 2 GB ram and it very rarely gets laggy. I usually leave it rendering overnight and I always render to a folder and then burn later.
