Problem playing a DVD on one player.

[link to this post]

[Apologies for the relatively long post]

An old friend is a fan of James Last. He already has 2 of JL's DVDs and recently bought a third - Gentleman of Music. But it won't play on his player. He got it from HMV and has had it replaced twice, so he's on his third copy. All have behaved the same.

His player was given to him, he has no instructions, but it works for him. If I remember correctly, it's a Pacific and looks like this one.

He asked to haver a look at the problem. My initial thought was that the DVD was DVD9 dual-layer and I wondered if his player could only play single layer discs. I managed to 'downsize' the DVD and burned it on to a single layer DVD-R for him. It plays perfectly for him and he's very happy.

However I'm still trying to understand the problem. The DVD in question plays on my Panasonic DVD recorder, and on my Panasonic blu-ray player. It also plays on my PC. But on his player, after quite a delay and just after 3 solid clicks BAD DISK is displayed.

This afternoon I went over and tried a known single layer and dual layer DVDs; they both played fine. I looked at the other two JL DVDs. They're both dual layer, one is PAL and the other is NTSC. Both play fine on his player. All three are Region 0.

I've got the DVDs at home at the moment and have used Nero Info and DVDInfoPro to get details of the discs as follows:

It's the third one, Gentleman of music that is the problem one.

Any bright ideas?

Could it be that the third disk stipulates thatit is a joilet type and the other two, that play ok, do not.

Good spot, hadn't seen that. Seems strange for a commercial disc to have different settings - to me at least.

Is there any way I could 'de-Joilet' it and write it to a dual layer disc myself?

Wonder if the fact that on Amazon it says very specifically "Region Two Playback Only" has got anything to do with it. It would seem counterintuitive if they are Region 0 but....

Region 2 or Region 0 (no region coding) should play fine on a standard UK DVD player. The fact that all 3 of his James Last DVDs are Region 0 is interesting, on Amazon they all appear to be Region 2 - unless Amazon default to Region 2 and haven't got Region 0 awareness smile. Play.com has the DVD as Region 0 in one place and Region 2 in another. The box for my friends clearly says Region 0 for all three DVDs.

I've just spotted what may well be the key issue.

Loading each of the three DVDs into my PC and looking at the file/folder contents shows some interesting differences.

Live at the Royal Albert Hall has the standard 2 folders AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS
Live in London 1978 has the standard 2 folders AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS plus a folder named JACKET-P
but
Gentleman of Music has the following file contents:
AUDIO_TS (File Folder)
cabinets (File Folder)
JACKET_P (File Folder)
Magic000 (File Folder)
setup (File Folder)
VIDEO_TS (File Folder)
autoplay.exe (168KB)
autorun.inf (1KB)
disc.id (1KB)
INSTALL.EXE (177KB)
pcfriend.ico (5KB)
README.TXT (13KB)

It seems pcfriend is some sort of monitoring software for when installed/played on a PC, and possibly why it uses the joilet file system. I think I'll get some dual layer DVD -R discs and copy just the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders to it and see if that plays.
