Bye Bye Jessops

Into administration. They have been teetering there for too long and some suppliers saw the problems early on and because they wanted payment for goods on delivery and Jessops demanded long payment terms they rightly stopped supplying.

How they have managed the last 4 years, I will never know.

By massive de-stocking. There was very little on show in the Leicester branch the last time I went in.

'Sir, please,' she said ... 'Will you not share your wisdom with us?'
'I have no wisdom,' he told her.
'Your experiences, then?'
'They have been trivial, uninteresting, and full of error.'

Does this mean I've missed out on a few bargains (i.e. there will be a big sale now)?

I browsed Jessops while shopping around, but didn't think their prices/stock was all that great.

From the BBC article:

The administrators said that it was "inevitable" that some stores would have to close.

PwC said that while Jessops was a well-known brand with a strong reputation for service, its core marketplace had seen a significant decline

Inevitable - that is a surprise!

Strong reputation for service - note that she did not say Good Service! They certainly did have a reputation for Poor Customer Service. Last time I wanted something from them, it was not in stock at the branch but they brought two in from another branch and then charged me £10 delivery! OK, I sold one for a profit which covered the costs but that is not good service.

They have not had "stock" for a long time!

And their prices horrrendous!

16GB Extreme Pro SDHC - last time I looked in store it was £60, today online it is £40 but most other places are £28-£30

You never know if a bargain might turn up though - so maybe worth a look and negotiation!

I'll maybe offer them £200 for a D600. wink

When I mistakenly posted this elsewhere I commented that's 3 chains in 3 years - Wildings and Jacobs being the other two.

I just hope the independents manage to keep going.

I last used them about 10 years ago & found them ok.

Went in local store last year, high price & lack of any good stock, so it was to be expected & they'd bust.

I'll stick to Amazon, although I'd prefer a local / British firm.

As has been said in the past on this forum and elsewhere, try before you buy. To be able to handle a camera and see whether it feels right in your hands can be so very important. The demise of high street camera shops is making that increasingly difficult frown

The reason they survived is probably because they were owned by their bank, HSBC.

Bought my DSLR from them about 6 years ago via their website and last went into a branch about 11 years ago to have some passport photographs done.

Their units will probably be taken up by betting shop chains with loads of people in gambling money they have just borrowed from a payday loan company or loan shark.

Its very sad our high streets will just have betting, pawn shops and payday loan outlets on them soon.
