Please, please advise Linux router+modem or ST585?

Really need your help, folks

Presently struggling with a 5 year old USB ADSL modem - but now want to go wireless.

I purchased a Linksys WRT54GLbroadband router, (the Linux one that you can run custom firmware on), without noting that it did not contain an ADSL modem. I have two options. I either sell this on eBay, and get a Speedtouch 585, or I buy an ADSL ethernet modem.

So, please advise.

If I keep the Linksys, what modem should I buy?

or should I sell it and buy a speedtouch.

All response welcome

I'm a privileged plusnet user. Whenever they have a problem affecting only a small number of users, it always includes me!

Just get a normal router and run it in bridge mode You also need to be aware that the Speedtouch 546 V6 I bought this year cannot be upgraded via telnet, only the Windows cd, so it can't be done with Linux, V5 is OK. I returned it for a refund. Draytek now sell an Ethernet modem.

Keep the the Linksys WRT54GL, install OpenWRT and PPTP Client. Purchase a ST-585v6 - dsldepot.com ; put it into PPPoA-PPTP relay mode. Use PPTP Client to initiate the DSL connection via the ST-585.

You should have used the bootp upgrade method.

Courtesy of RPM Whirlpool Forums -

1. Begin with the unit powered off via the power switch at the back.

2. Get a pin or a pen with a long enough nose to reach the reset button and hold it in.

3. Continue holding in the reset button and do not release it. Power the unit on by pressing the power button into the "on" state.

4. Still keep hold the reset button in for around 15 seconds. The power and Ethernet light should flash between red and green. Now you can release the reset.

5. Run the SpeedTouch firmware upgrade wizard. You only have about 1min to start it before the speedtouch reverts to standard boot. Hence have it ready to start before you do all the above.

Note: It is always recommended to run the SpeedTouch firmware upgrade wizards with a statically set IP address on your PC of the following:

IP: 10.0.0.1, Subnet: 255.0.0.0, You do not need gateway, dns etc. Keep the dialogue box open to return it to AUTO when finished.
