Which Netgear?

[link to this post]
Hi
I am looking to replace my Bt homehub 2.0, the performance of which (particualrly wireless stability), I am less than impressed with, to say the least. I have gathered from reading a lot of posts that people generally seem to favour the Netgear routers. But I am a little confused by all the various versions and models. Any advice as to which would be the best bet? Thanks.

Hi, I find it easier to sort network connectivity problems with the LAN (Local Area Network) configured with a static IP Address for each device on the network wired and wireless.

You could wait for this interesting fancy new dual band Netgear ADSL 2+ wireless-N (Draft 2.0) router.

I have a DG834gv3 and had no problems with it. I learned how to configure it and setup the security- straightforward. It never loses sync and I have a long line. I rarely switch it off. It never overheats.

If I was to change it ( if it started to go wrong) it would be a DG834GT a newer model.
Lots of good features and easy to setup.

Hi
Thanks for your reply and advice. I have decided to go for a netgear DGN2000.

P.S. What effect does assigning fixed ip addresses have? Does it reduce the likelyhood of disconnections/dropouts?

Hi, I have my LAN (Local Area Network) configured with a Static IP Address for each device on the network, so I can tell the devices how and where to connect and I can see clearly how the devices are connected.
I never did like relying solely on the router DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server for network connectivity.

No. Internal fixed IP's have nothing whatsoever to do with connection issues.

Returning to the main topic (Which Netgear?) - after reading around, I realised that newer does not necessarily mean better and have decided to go for a netgear dg834n instead of the dgn2000.

In that case, go for the DG834GT or the DG834G v4, if you can find one.

John.

Why are the dg834gt or dg834g better than the dg834n?

They're not - you've sneaked in and edited your post smile

Your reference to dgn834 looked like a typo for dg834 as you hadn't mentioned the dg834n in your previous posts and it looked like you'd dismissed the dgn2000.

Basically, any of them with a Broadcom chip is best. smile

John.
