Sometimes it reconnects by itself, other times only a reset of the Router and rebooting the PC will bring it back to life.
If I go to Network connections in the Control Panel, I can see a '!' in the connection between the PC and the Router. Letting Windows 7 try to fix the problem doesn't help.
The problem seems to have become noticeable only quite recently (since I got hooked on COD Modern Warfare 2), but maybe it's been hidden... sometimes Steam reports a loss of internet connectivity (and a check via a browser confirms the internet isn't working) but then reconnects by itself again.
My daughter is often using the laptop when this happens (via wireless connection with the built-in Dell modem) and she seems to be unaffected.
The connection is to the Realtek Gigabit port on my Gigabyte P35 DS3C motherboard. The Realtek drivers are up to date according to Windows (it's Win 7 Home Prem 64bit)
I should have checked to make sure that's really true - I'll go and check the Realtek site once I've posted this
What can I do to identify the true cause of the problem?
Is there anything I can run to monitor my LAN connection, or the Router?
I'm a bit of a clueless noob when it comes to the networking, so I need some hand-holding on this!
