Direct connect to Speedtouch 585 drops (but wireless works)

[link to this post]
I have my O2-provided Speedtouch 585 (v7 iirc) directly cabled into my PC, and every now and again it will drop the connection. I get this whilst browsing, in the middle of games, and occasionally when bringing my PC out of Sleep mode.

Sometimes it reconnects by itself, other times only a reset of the Router and rebooting the PC will bring it back to life.

If I go to Network connections in the Control Panel, I can see a '!' in the connection between the PC and the Router. Letting Windows 7 try to fix the problem doesn't help.

The problem seems to have become noticeable only quite recently (since I got hooked on COD Modern Warfare 2), but maybe it's been hidden... sometimes Steam reports a loss of internet connectivity (and a check via a browser confirms the internet isn't working) but then reconnects by itself again.

My daughter is often using the laptop when this happens (via wireless connection with the built-in Dell modem) and she seems to be unaffected.

The connection is to the Realtek Gigabit port on my Gigabyte P35 DS3C motherboard. The Realtek drivers are up to date according to Windows (it's Win 7 Home Prem 64bit)
I should have checked to make sure that's really true - I'll go and check the Realtek site once I've posted this

What can I do to identify the true cause of the problem?
Is there anything I can run to monitor my LAN connection, or the Router?
I'm a bit of a clueless noob when it comes to the networking, so I need some hand-holding on this!

I can see a lot of people have looked at my thread but not been able to help me - that's fair enough, thanks for taking the time to look - can you suggest a good site for me to go to to see if they can diagnose the fault if it's in the Realtek LAN port?

I only really know general hardware and 3D graphics card forums, not the best place to go for networking help frown

cheers

Have you asked if anyone else has had the same router problem using the O2 forum?

Thanks, that hadn't occurred to me!

I've checked the forum and there are reports of problems that seem to be with the router losing connection to the internet when subjected to both P2P and wireless traffic together - some IP tables getting filled up (?)

I've tried flashing to the latest firmware version, but it failed. I think I'll have to give O2 a call - what are the chances they'll send me a replacement router?

I've downloaded the latest Ethernet driver and installed that, just in case it'll help.

Are you familiar with your line's stats? (Attenuation/Sync/SNR and error counts)

Your question is rather complicated which might explain the lack of response.
I would start with the basics to see what's going on...

Right, I don't know what all this stuff means, but I did find out how to get it, so here we go:

DSL Connection

Link Information

Uptime: 1 day, 1:50:56

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 429 / 12,234

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.0

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 45.0 / 48.0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 5.0 / 6.5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 97 / 51,892,543

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 97 / 1,463

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 758 / 1,195

Now, I maybe a bit of a network noob, but 51 million FEC Errors doesn't sound very good :/

Hmm, your downstream sync speed is 201 percent of the average speed for your attenuation.
Router stats look odd.

Those stats do look rather odd - 12,234 download on a 48db attenuation line!?!

It might be worth posting the stats immediately after restarting your router.
NB. Best to restart during daylight hours for your best sync.

The upstream attenuation is also almost equal to the downstream instead of being about half.

Router stats very odd, as you say.

[re: RobertoS] [link to this post]
Cheers, I will do a restart tomorrow. In the meantime I've managed to update the firmware to the latest version, and have since had a trouble-free prolonged MW2 gaming session, and also downloaded a full game from Steam at a zippy 1.2meg per second.

I've just used tbbMeter, and a test run of 100mb ran at 1.3MB per sec.

So it seems to be working well!
