ADSL only syncs when I'm on the phone

[link to this post]
I've just moved house and only had ADSL connected for a couple of weeks. It has been a little unstable in that time but completely gave up this morning. Neither of the modems I have (SpeedTouch 610 pro & SpeedTouch Home which worked fine at my old house) will sync up unless I am on the phone making a call - odd. As soon as I hangup the phone the ADSL connection drops. It has to be a connected call - not just having the phone off the hook. It doesn't mater what type of phone - old analogue or digital.

I've tried going direct to the back of the master socket, with different filters and without. I do live very near to a mobile phone & TV mast and when I listen on the analogue phone I can clearly hear Radio 4 - will this kind of interference mess up the line?

Report to BT Phone or ISP (BT Business Broadband) - Who's fault will it be? I don't want to get in the middle of a finger pointing exercise. And how will they fix it?

If you get noise of any description on the phone it shouldn't be there. So is a voice fault.

Report it to BT Phone and do not mention the Broadband at all, else as you fear they will just tell you to go to the broadband people who in effect can do nothing about it.

Re the broadband trouble, the noise will probably affect it, but I have heard similar in the past. Something to do with the voltage on the line going up when the phone is used, and that enables the broadband to function when without that the signal is too weak. Presumably because of the noise!

I tried a different analogue phone on the line and don't hear Radio 4 so I haven't logged a voice fault. I'll put that down to the first phone being junk. The second phone also doesn't have to be making a call in order to kick the ADSL into sync, I just have to have the phone off the hook.

The only bit at my end that I haven't swapped out is the master socket - worth a try? or is it going to be more likely a line or exchange problem.

As others are saying it sounds like you have a straight forward line fault - so I would let BT investigate.

I've had similar to you in the past - ADSL would only sync if I took a phone off the hook etc. I got this resolved by reporting a voice fault - BT found a broken wire where the dropwire entered the house - it had just fatigued through.

It's been mentioned here before - the line syncs when there's extra current over the failing wire as it's creating some type of electrical 'sealing' effect.
