Recommend a wireless VOIP Router & ADSLNation XTE-2005

[link to this post]

I currently have Thomson 780WL & have it tweaked as my BB here is awful - i can barely get 2Mb. I get frequent disconnects which maybe down to my tweaking but was wondering if there is anything better out there. I asked one of the specialist online shops & they recommended the DrayTek Vigor 2710Vn Wireless N ADSL2+ Router /w VoIP (300Mbps) & a ADSLNation XTE-2005 Professional Quality Master Faceplate Filter.

My ISP thinks i should be able to get around 3Mb but without my tweaking I'm lucky to get 1Mb

Any thoughts?

Can you post your line stats reported by your router? This may work http://192.168.1.254/cgi/b/dsl/dt/?ce=1&be=0&l0=1&l1=0

Have you made sure all your phones and sky boxes are filtered?

Have you removed your ring wire?

Is it better when the router is plugged into the test socket behind the master?

The only phone I have is plugged into the router (voip) & don't have any sky or anything like that. There is no difference between test socket & master. It was a new line fitted in September 2010 when i took the BB & Phone with Vivaciti. So no ring wire should be present.

I rebooted the router a short while ago because it was only synched at around 1.5

My line stats:

Are those stats un-tweaked?

If so, remember that when ISPs talk about the speed you should get, they generally mean connection speed, not actual download speed. You are getting 2,563kbps so for that attenuation I would think it is reasonable. 3Mbps would be on a perfect line of that length, and perfect lines are rare.

The best download speed you will get is around 84% of the connection speed. So around 2Mbps on the connection you have at the moment.

My stats are tweaked. I can download at around 1.8 Mbps tweaked usually from usenet. Today I topped out around 2.0 with the 2.5 sync. Now I'm at 2.2 sync as i lost the connection. Would another router help with the stability issues & would the faceplate be a worthwhile investment?

What have you tweaked? The noise margin appears to be around 6dB - does the service (which?) default to 9dB? And have you chosen ADSL2 rather than 2+ in your tweaking, as that is what the stats are showing?

No idea about the BT Business Hub sorry except I often see it recommended.

Here are my line stats untweaked:

Uptime: 0 days, 0:02:12

Modulation: G.992.3 Annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 558 / 1.545

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [KB/KB]: 168,00 / 852,00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12,5 / 0,0

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 32,0 / 60,0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 12,0 / 12,5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / IFTN

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 27 / 0

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 159 / 0

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 35 / 0

I am using the DMT tool to set the noise margin. That is the only tweak I have done - set to minimum. So it should be set as adsl2+. I am on Vivaciti LLU

You said it was vivaciti earlier, but they supply LLU broadband from three different companies. Which package? That will tell us the supplier.

Have you asked them about the reasons for the ADSL2 and apparent 12dB noise margin?

Is the firmware on your router up-to-date? How long have you had it, and do you have any stats from your previous ISP, or speed test results from them?

I'm wondering if the 780 doesn't get on well with the exchange Infineon.

Its Surfwise & the package is Broadband Complete.

I have questioned the Speed & given them the stats but they just say thats the best I can get due to the distance from my exchange. The router was bought 2nd hand & has the most up to to date firmware that allows use of the DMT tool to tweak. Unfortunately, I only moved to this address in September & there was no active line. Hence why I had to get a new line installed.

I'm in Cumbernauld which apparently is a broadband 'not spot'. If I had known how bad it was I wouldn't have moved tbh. However, now that i have, I'm trying to make the best of it even if this means spending a bit more on hardware. Hence the post smile
