BT Infinity - HH3 Alternative needed

[link to this post]

Hi there,

Today I got BT Infinity installed, the connection itself is superb. 38MBit down / 8MBit up. No problems.

The trouble began when I started using BT Vision. For some reason it causes my BB speed to drop to 13-14MBit.

At first I feared an exchange, contention or line settling issue but that doesn't appear to be the case.

I can reproduce it 100% of the time, just use Vision on Demand for a minute. Turning off the Vision box don't help, I have to reset the Homehub 3.

So to cut to the chase, I want an alternative to the Homehub 3 that would work. Even better if it can also replace the Openreach modem at the same time.

I assume this works similar to cable? Just a PPPoE router required here if the VDSL ones are too pricey.

Thoughts?

(Although I do miss Be*, 6 months free was too good to turn down.)

Try logging in to the router, and in advanced settings set the wireless interface type to '802.11 n 40Mhz'. Ignore the warning about wireless b/g equipment not working, mine do. Worth a try.

I was using a wired connection when it was only hitting 26MBit. frown Get the full 40 using the homehub.

Correct - a cable router with a fast enough CPU to cope with the 40meg line, and one that does PPPoE. Don't bother changing the OpenReach VDSL box - as you might have hassles with support if you get issues in the future. (Wait a year or so).

Don't forget to update your .sig as it still says Sky.

You could try one of these.

That's the highest price I've seen. Usually £20-£29 including delivery. Varies day by day. Or you could try the later version shown on the same page.

Returnable of course.

I'm on Openreach FTTC with another ISP and it works fine. I know of (at least) three others using it.

Beware of the version with Gig ethernet. JLamy is having trouble with that.

My domains, website and mail hosting - Tsohost. Internet connection - IDNet Home Starter Fibre. Live BQM.

That Technicolour one is the same as the homehub 3. HH3 is a rebadged one of those apparently.
