Wireless conflict

[link to this post]

A neighbour has just had a new Edimax wirelss router installed. Her sons laptop works no problem. She has a Tower with a wirelss card installed. The card is a Buffalo WL1Z PCI G54S. This will not connect at all . One moment it says connected then disconnected.

I was thinking since the router is new it may be using an up to date signal protocol and the card is using an older one.

Any ideas?

I had this problem with my Son's old pc on Windows XP. The router was set to automatically choose a wireless channel that could not be detected by the pc. Manually changing a channel until you find one that works with both items may be your best bet.

Check for driver updates for the card in the tower. You may need to go to the Buffalo website to get them.

If you don't know how to find the card driver details, they can be in a slightly different place on different versions of Windows, but if you go through something like Control Panel >> System & Maintenance >> Hardware >> Device Manager, (Device Manager is always what you are looking for), you should find it under Network Adapters.

Right-Click >> Properties >> Driver tab. That tells you the version, so check on Buffalo for later and download it if there is one, as the "Update Driver" button expects you to know where the new one is.
