Cisco 877 and FTTC

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I get FTTC broadband next week and I have been shipped the usual netgear router from my ISP.

I have been using a Cisco router for many years and my 877 i've had for over 2 years and currently it's been online over 6 months.

Can I configure the 877 to work with fttc either as a router / modem or maybe using one of the ethernet ports and use it just as a router with the BT install modem?

Many thanks

A quick google suggests it's possible, albeit not straight forward, linkie.

You should be able to put one of the LAN ports in a different VLAN and configure is as your WAN port.

Are you proficient in IOS? If not this is not going to be easy.

Just a thought, but is there any reason the same trick would not work with a 831 ? Reason for doing so is that the official WAN port on a 831 is only 10 meg, and using one of the fast ethernet ports might allow me to squeeze a little more out of it.

Might be depends on how many vlans the 831 can have.

IIRC the 831 didn't support VLANs at all.

Perfect! Been searching google but not the correct keywords. My iOS is not bad as I setup both my original 837 which I no longer use and my 877 from scratch.

Fttc gets installed on Tuesday, I'll use the ISP provided router (a netgear jobby) to make sure it all works 100% then I'll have a play with the 877.

Just fired up the 831 and checked - looks like you are right re the lack of VLAN support.

Just been thinking. I have 2 broadband connections, one will be upgraded to fibre on Tuesday.

Technically I should be able to use the same device, a 877 for both. ATM connection for the adsl and one Ethernet with pppoe for the fttc. Then vlanning the remaining Ethernet ports?

Anyone think it's possible?

Yes...no issues with that.

NAT tables will be interesting.
