Does it need a firmware update to do this?

I can't find anything on google to give me a concrete answer.

What happens if I try to use a non ADSL2+ router with an ADSL2+ connection? Is it just slower or will it not work at all?

Old 2005 manuals show the 585 has ADSL2+ support, but worth using latest firmware as with most devices.

On an ADSL2+ line an ADSL only modem will simply connect at ADSL only speeds. Exception being if you have a service with Annex M enabled

The exchange kit will negotiate the protocol downwards to ADSL1.

Can't you tell if there is an ADSL2+ setting option in its Configuration?
