Connect Netgear ADSL2 Router to Router With A WAN Port?

[link to this post]

Does anyone know if it is possible to connect a Netgear ADSL2 DG834 router (running custom firmware) to a new router without a modem but a WAN port? I need the ADSL2 router to provide Internet connectivity only the new router will be the switch?

What settings do I need to look at?

Do I just put the Netgear in Modem only mode and connect any network port of the Netgear to the new router only device?

TIA

Im pretty sure you just do as you suggest and select modem only mode and connect it to the wan port on your new router. I am just about to do the same on a DG834GT.

Can you reply with an update when you do something similar? I am a bit confused on how it will work.

Can you use any of the networked ports of the Netgear router to connect to the WAN port - if it has disabled routing will any ports actually work? Will I still have access to the Netgear admin pages if routing is disabled?

TIA

Any of the ports will work if the modem mode does work for your connection at all.

I've done this but using standard Netgear firmware.

Set the Netgear to modem only mode using the 'hidden' config page.
Set the Lan IP address of the Netgear to be on the same subnet as your main router.
Connect any port on the Netgear to the WAN port of the router.

Enter your PPPoE username and password into the router.

You should now be up and running.

If you want to be able to access the modems stats connect another cable from your LAN (Switch or direct from router) into a spare port on the Netgear.
You should then be able to log in to the Netgear using the LAN address you set earlier.
