Accessing Asus N-56 Routers Setup without a Modem?

[link to this post]

Hi basically I have bought a new Asus N-56 Router to use with my upcoming Fibre Install next month.

However I was wanting to update the admin/password/wireless settings before hand.

But no matter what I do I can't seem to access the Asus Control Panel - connecting the Lan cable direct to my pc accessing 192.168.1.1 etc.

Am I missing something? Do I need a modem to access the Control Panel?

I have a Netgear DGN2200 (N300) ADSL Modem/Router i'm using atm.

No biggie just i'd like to sort an unsecured admin/password/wireless hehe.

Are you plugging Ethernet cable into a lan port?

What ip address is the router giving the pc?

Yes Ethernet Cable direct into a LAn port on the PC to Lan on Router but nothing.

Using a wireless USB stick shows Asus on network but again can't access Control Panel.

I'll have a mess around tommorow.

I assume you've tried the obvious- using a different cable to rule that out, another computer if possible, and turned off/disabled the wireless connection to the Netgear to make sure there isn't some sort of conflict there?

My router is an N66, but there's a section in the manual that refers to this problem (in the FAQs).

Main suggestions are basically (on the computer)

1) Ensure use of a proxy server is disabled

2) Ensure the computer obtains its IP address via DHCP

3) Ensure dial-up is disabled (I suspect it already is!)

Although not mentioned under this heading, performing a router reset shouldn't hurt- press the reset button for >5 seconds.

I'll try it on another computer later on.

Thanks for the advice.

Yea tried it and it seems there's a conflict with it and the Netgear so turned it off and can access the Router.

I updated the firmware/passes/wi-fi etc.

The Firmware however makes it like a brand new GUI smile

Thanks for your time in helping.
