Fritz 7390 Multicast settings for BT YouView Extra Channels?

[link to this post]

Hello,

I've been running BT Infinity with a Fritz 7390 VDSL Modem/Router and am very happy with the setup. I really don't want to change it...

I've just got a Humax YouView Box from BT, and have tripped up on the problem where the router's multicast implementation is not compatible with the Humax box. There seems to be little info on the web about using these two pieces of hardware together.

Has anyone had any success or are there any known hacks to make it work?

Thanks

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I've just run into the same issue as I take part in the Plusnet TV trial. Did you ever find a workaround, or reach-out to AVM for support?

Thanks!
Doug

Success for the Fritz!Box 7390 as a combined VDSL2 modem/router!  But it was not easy...

Firstly, I found BT's requirements for customer premise equipment to act as a reference for what I needed to configure.  The relevant section of http://www.sinet.bt.com/sinet/sins/pdf/498v5p1.pdf is 3.2.4 (WAN VLAN Layer):

Where the CP intends to use Multicast, IGMP reports destined for Openreach Multicast for GEA shall be encoded as IGMPv3 or IGMPv2 over C-VLAN ID 101. Source Specific Multicast option within IGMPv3 must not be used.

Where the CP is using PPP and intends to use Multicast for GEA, the modem shall be able to detect and process multicast frames differently to unicast. Multicast for GEA frames sent into Openreach (IGMP reports) shall not be encapsulated with PPP otherwise they will passed transparently as normal GEA traffic.

With that in-mind, I downloaded the configuration from the Fritz and edited it to include a new sub interface named IPTV.  I discovered that the interface had to be configured with an IP address for it to come-up.  Here is a unified diff showing the changes I made:

Definitely not for the faint-of-heart!  I'll send my findings to AVM and ask if they can create an ISP profile covering Openreach GEA Multicast, making this configuration automatic should the user select the right profile.

Fritz 7390 Firmware 84.06.20i seems to disallow editing the saved settings and reloading them - it reports the file is not a valid restore file. Does any one know a work around to add Doug's edits?

The latest version of FBEditor is able to retrieve and save edited files directly to a local Fritz!Box. I've successfully used it since AVM removed the NoChecks option. Earlier versions fail -- you must have the latest:

http://www.ip-phone-forum.de/showthread.php?t=79513

The only downside for me is the entire UI being German, but I managed to get by thanks to Google Translate.

Hi, I'm looking for some help/clarification

I've tried FBE Editor version 0.7 and I don't seem to be able to save my edited files back to my Fritz!Box 3790. I saw your suggestion of using the latest version, which I am using as far as I can tell. After you edit the file should all you need to do is select Konfiguration zurückspielen ? After that you restart the box and you should be have the new configuration loaded or am I missing a step?

I'm trying to get my box support bt tv, managed to get it to support VDSL fairly easily, one more change to go!

If the Fritz!Box accepts the configuration as valid it should reboot automatically following 'Konfiguration zurückspielen'. If nothing happens, check the configuration changes for typos and retry.

Make sure not to include NoChecks in the config; that option no longer exists and will cause validation to fail.

Until I upgraded to the latest version the Fritz!Box silently rejected my updates and didn't reboot.

Hi Doug, Greatly appreciate your help. I'm definitely using FB Editor 0.7 and my firmware is 84.06.20 but no matter what I do I cannot seem to save changes to the configuration file.

I even tried change my active_name in the ar7cfg block as I figured I couldn't go wrong there. In all cases it never rebooted.

i have made sure I am not using NoChecks command as you mentioned before. I've spent a hour or two googling around tonight to find a solution but I cannot seem to find an answer.

Have you encountered this problem i have described and would you recommend a something I might try to over come this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Randy.
Have you made any progress?
I had a similar issue to yours but then I downloaded the latest version of FBEditor (0.7.2 instead of 0.7, which was not working) and managed to upload the modified settings to the Fritz Box. I'm using 7490 with firmware 6.20.
My problem now is that although I have made the changes suggested by Doug, I still cannot see BT TV (BT Sport more specifically) frown

Thanks

I'm currently engaged with AVM support to get this support made official. I've tested a couple of proposed configuration updates for the 7390 and will soon begin testing the 7490.

Some initial feedback:

- The Fritz!Box 7390 can support YouView Extra Channels only when using the built-in VDSL modem, not when using the Openreach modem.
- The Fritz!Box 7490 should support either configuration.

I'm continuing to test and will reply to this post when I have any news.

Hi Andy,

Sadly not.

AVM removed the 'NoChecks' option, so configurations get rejected unless they have a valid signature. There is a Java tool (FBeditor) to edit configurations but I've not seen anyone have success with recent versions of Fritz!OS.

I'll update here once AVM has news on official support.

Can you revert to an older OS version (I don't know if this one would do it): ftp://service.avm.de/Downgrade/FRITZ!Box_7490/english/ then after the config is patched it can be updated with the patch intact?

Hi Doug - I have BT YouView and a Fritz 3490 (basically the 7490 without the telephony stuff) and am having difficulty with getting the multicast channels to work. Did you get anywhere with AVM adding this as a profile? I did email their support and this is what they told me...

"The FRITZ!Box supports IGMP v2 and v3 and multicast.

For IPTV the FRITZ!Box usually must be connected to an IPTV set-top device
that establishes a second virtual connection via VLAN. It may be possible
to enter this VLAN ID in the FRITZ!Box in section "Change Connection
Settings" on page "Internet > Account Information". Please consult the
service provider for further information on how their service can be used
with a NAT router."

I assume there is nothing I can do with the current interface as I have already selected a VLAN to get everything working in the first place? It's frustrating as you have proved the box can do what is required, we just can't add the settings to make it so!

Was this ever incorporated into new AVM firmware? Does 06.30 work without modifiction, if not is it possible to modify 06.30 using FBEditor (for 4790)?

I really don't know the answer, I had a 7390 working (having used DougM's mods) then I bought a 7490, I saved the settings on the 7390 and restored them to the 7490, I do not know if the modifications were part of the backed up data but my (Plusnet) IPTV worked straight away with the new router.

So can you confirm that BT Sport channels and ESPN and AMC which use multicast are working through the 7490

I can confirm that all my subscribed multicast channels, including BT Sport1 (just tuned to that one to check, currently showing WTA Miami open tennis) are working perfectly.
What I don't know is whether copying my old settings from the 7390 played any part or if it would have 'just worked' anyway.

Sorry for the late reply. Thought I had posted it but couldn't have.

Any way, it must have been the copying of the settings over from the 7390 to the 7490.
At the mo, on my BT line my, 7490 does not allow any of my subscribed multicast channels through even though AVM state
The FRITZ!Box supports IGMP v2 and v3 and multicast

Hi there

I tried the FritzBox 7490 with the latest firmware and it didn't help the situation. I know that it says is does work with Multicast, but not in the same way that BT Openreach have implemented it.

In order to get it to work, you can use the settings above and try and create a new virtual interface that is not encapsulated in the same way.

I can confirm that with some messing around, I managed to download the tool, and get it to use the English files for the interface. Once I had that, I then implemented the changes above and multicast channels all work.

So it is possible, but it certainly isn't clean. smile

It would be much nicer if Fritz made the change at their end for BT customers, but I have asked them and they were not that responsive.

If I can work out how to remove ALL personal settings etc. I'll see if it's possible to save the config with 'just' the multicast bits and maybe upload that somewhere for others to use.

*Unfortunately I can't promise a timescale on this due to other commitments.

That would certainly help someone like me so is appreciated.
I can get around the Sports channels for now by streaming from the laptop via Chromecast. Better than nothing.

Any tips on how to change the interface language Warren, and the version of the editor you used?

Sure, it was a bit of luck really. After you open the editor, it creates a file called...

FBEditor.properties.xml

That file has an entry in it called...

<entry key="language">en_US</entry>

Well, it was something else, but I played around with it until I found an en that worked. smile

Thanks, I never knew this - I managed to 'learn' enough German (largely by trial and error) to know which menu items I needed to open, save, find, etc.
I'm definitely going to 'teach' the FBEditor to speak English if I can.

[Edit] Done now, thanks @warrenk.

Can you try FBEditor: http://www.heise.de/download/fbeditor.html (note @warrenk's change above about language to make it easier to use) just to check whether @DougM's original edits are showing in your config?

By the way, which Fritz!OS version is everyone using - my 7490 (working with Plusnet IPTV (Essentially the same as BTTV multicast/YouView with slightly different channel line-up) is on 06.30 using my config saved from my 7390 also running 06.30 but I (obviously) didn't remove any personal/account details from my own backup/restore.

As mentioned above, I have Plusnet multicast IPTV (delivered by the BT Multicast platform) working on my Fritz!Box 7490 (and previously working on a 7390).
I suspect others have working configurations too so it is possible to make it work, just a great pity that AVM don't incorporate a suitable configuration in their firmware themselves.

I thought we might be 'nearly there' last June.

I assume you've gone into: settings > Hostname/IP Address (mine's set to the default 192.168.178.1), also set the password: Settings > Password and set that then: File > Read Configuration?

Ditto. I'm going to take the FBEditor route when I've a bit more time to play around with things. Reason I want it working is because it's a handy unit for testing in the office as it has a build in packet capturing feature that avoids having to mess about with hubs etc.

Hi Al1264,

I just snagged a 7490 on Ebay and am trying to get my BT multicast channels working too. Could you share a copy of your 7490 config please ? Necessary personal details removed of course.

Thanks in advance.

I have tried applying the previous (earlier post) edits to no avail. FBEditor indicates the file restored to the FB successfully and indeed the FB log entry indicates so but it does not seem to have happened (Box does not reboot automatically and a re-read of the FB configuration into FBEditor just recovers the original unedited config)

Never mind, found the problem.
Seems the checksum was not being updated on the edited file when trying to restore.

Found a Perl script (below) that recalculated the new checksum for me, when I put this in the file, the edited file could be restored and now muticast works. I had rather presumed that FBEditor 0.7 would have done the checksum work for me.

BT IPTV (YouView) now confirmed working on 7490 with Fritz!OS 6.52.

Hey, 1st post - hello all &#128077;

I have a 7490, works very well, very happy with it indeed however, I did have BT TV Uhd installed on Saturday & have the same issue as some have described here.

Would anyone be willing to post / paste / pm a sanitised version of their script with some basic instructions so I can resume using my 7490 (running 6.52 I think) with BT TV please?

I'd be happy to donate to a / the worthy cause.

The BT HH5 is driving me nuts & I have lost consistent connectivity with devices which previously negotiated secure holes through the 7490's firewall.

Sincerely appreciated! Please help &#128561;

Will PM an old config that worked with the 6.30 firmware.

I have sanitised it so there is a bit of work to do here. Also it allowed me to upgrade each time. So once it was working on 6.30, I've been able to upgrade each firmware as normal.

I hope that helps.

Hi All,
I also have a 7390, though am set up with a separate router as i just couldn't manage to get the 7390 working with Plusnet. The modem is an ECI B Focus V2Fub. I assume this Openreach router (from Plusnet) supports multicast. Any idea on how i can get the router working with this? Are the changes required the same as previously detailed in this post? I'm getting the IPC6023 message.

Many thanks in advance.
