BT HH5 wifi access point

[link to this post]

Hi Im setting up a Pfsense router to load balance my 2 internet connections and they will be wired only, 2 modems (cable/openreach) into 2 wans and then LAN out into a wired Gbit hub to goto the network all of which hardware i already have ready to set up, Now the problem being this set up as said will no longer have wifi as with the current routers set up which will be needed for the mobile / tablets in the house,
Im no longer with BT but have a BT home hub 5 left over, Can i use this as a wireless access point as it has pretty good wifi so if i can would save having to buy one so a good £40-£50 saved if so with the interface being basic as hell dose anyone know how i go about doing this?, Is it a case of just turning DHCP off and possibly DMZing the HH5s ip so i dont get a double nat situation (tbf i dont think a double nat would interfere with anything on said phones/tablets) of will there be anything else involved, would also be nice to use the remaining 3 Gbit ports but they are less important, i have used a router as a hub before but it was wired only and not sure if it will be any different

Thanks Ash

Don't use the WAN port on the HH5. Disable DHCP as you say. And make sure the HH5 IP address is different to the IP of any other devices on the network.

I think all that can be done in the HH5 and should make it into a dumb wireless switch.

As ian72 says, don't use the WAN port, use one of the LAN ports to connect to your network, turn off the DHCP and assign it a fixed IP address. The other LAN ports will work too.

I don't think double-NAT will be anything to worry about as the HH5 will become a WAP on your network, no extra natting will take place.

Thanks for the replays guys I did know the bit about not using the wan port should of said. I kinda did have a feeling it would work as can't see the wireless side being much different the wiered side I had in the previous set up with the wiered router. Think I just wanted some re assurance before I actually start messing about lol
