Replace Asus WAP

[link to this post]

I have an ASUS EA-N66 WLAN Ethernet Adapter. This is now dying; needs rebooting several times per week or even per day, as yesterday.

Any recommended replacement? Output power is adequate but, although dual band ( 2.4 and 5ghz) only one band can be active one time. We have two out of five devices that can only receive 2.4ghz.

According to this review http://www.thinkbroadband.com/hardware/reviews/74-as... the device can opetate in 3 modes:

  1. Traditional wireless access point
  2. Wireless repeater to receive wireless signal and extend network
  3. Ethernet adapter to connect devices to a wireless network

Which do you use it for?

If it's anything like its little brother the TP-LINK TL-WA801ND then you'll send it back within a week. Absolutely useless piece of junk. In repeater mode you can't rename SSID/channel/security type. Every change i made required rebooting the unit.

After messaging TP-Link support they informed me most of my problems are gone on later hardware revisions. Amazon sent me v1. I love Amazon, but they always seem to have older hardware versions.

A recent search for a TP-Link managed switch I was unable to find a single retailer with the latest V3, despite messaging around 20 or so companies. Every single company had V2, except Amazon who had V1. I couldn't buy V1 as it had no built in GUI and required a Windows app to make configuration changes.

Check your TP-LINK TL-WA901ND when it arrives. The newest hardware version is V5. If you've been sent V1 or V2 then it might be worth reading up on what they've changed in later versions. The newest versions may be impossible to source.
