Diagnostic Help Needed - Vigor VDSL and Line Drops

[link to this post]

Hi,

Over the last 10 days i've been experiencing some drop outs (some days clean some days i get lots), as this my line has been stable for years i'm hoping that the problem is not at my end. But PlusNet aren't being very responsive and i'm just waiting for them to say it's because i don't have their router.

This is the last 24 hours on the TB monitor
My Broadband Ping

What i'm really curious about is the effect that i see on my local network .... The few times i've had line drops everything internally just carries on working... But this time at the moment when the "problem occurs" i see the response time from the router goes up ie:

then shortly after recovering i see that external pings restart ok.

I've tried to find anything on my local network that might be going rogue... but i've not found anything.

Can anyone thing of things i could/should check/test ? Any info that the router has that might be interesting ? Anything i should be collecting ?

Thanks .. Andy

Does the Vigor allow you to see processor utilisation? Wondering if something is doing a DDOS on your router and therefore it is struggling to respond to any pings because it is busy doing other things?

Hi, might be of no help but I had the exact same issue with a vigor 130, I changed it to a TP-Link W9970 in bridge mode and the constant drop outs stopped. I now use a HG612 and its rock solid, do you have different hardware to try temporarily to see if it stops? Even the router your ISP supplied, just for testing purposes.

Funny that was one of my first thoughts ...

Yes it does ... but when it's that slow the web UI just doesn't respond

I have the email interface enabled that reports on DoS attacks but I've not seen anything that matches ... really just a few port scans and the like.

I'll see if the console can give me the CPU figures and if that responds during an outage

i have the openreach modem somewhere, but no other router ... this router has been working for about 3 years without a hitch, so i hope it's not local hardware

unless something changed in the cab or at the exchange 10 days ago that has caused the problem.

If the UI doesn't respond then it does sound like an issue with the device.

Try the openreach modem in place of the 130,

What Vigor are you using?

What cabinet are you connected to, Huawei or ECI?

Yes it helps. The "DSLAM CHIPSET VENDOR : < BDCM >" says you're on a Huawei cab.

Are you running the "formal SIN 498 firmware" as detailed here? http://www.draytek.co.uk/information/our-technology/...

Upgrade 2860 to latest firmware using RST file (i.e. this does firmware upgrade and factory reset). Obviously jot down all settings prior to doing this as you'll need to reconfigure. Do not restore settings from backup, configure them all manually.

This will rule out a configuration issue.

Regarding DDoS issue simply unplug WAN connection and see if pings to router stabalize.

Ensure Hardware Acceleration is disabled.

The suggestions for swapping out your router and filter(s) are well worth doing.

I had similar ping graphs earlier this year and eventually fixed it by swapping out my very old DrayTek. It had worked very well for over 10 years, but just went bad. frown

Line One:- Zen Fibre 1 - DrayTek Vigor 2860ac
Line Two:- Andrews and Arnold - DrayTek Vigor 130 Modem

Yes ... i'm running the latest firmware... firmwares for the 2860 have been SIN498 compliant for a couple of years now.

For the moment i'm on hold ... PlusNet monitored the lines for a few days and they saw the last set of drop outs ... but they couldn't see any line issues.

At my end i've changed nothing but my services is back to normal (72 hrs no drops)

I note that sync speed has drop slightly ... but speeds measured by speedtest.net are almost identical. I can also see that the SNR has gone up ..... is was showing 1-2 db when this started and is now at 4-6 db.
Looking back into the last months worth of syslog i can see it was always 4-6ish db and it changed the day before the dropouts started ... to me that is curious .....

Interesting, in my company two of our locations with Draytek 2860n (both TalkTalk Business FTTC) both have had the same drop out issues over the last 10 days or so.

In WireShark, we are seeing lots of "Spurious retransmissions" and many issues; we think mostly with HTTPS sites. At first we thought it was TalkTalk implementing some kind of MiTM filtering of HTTPS traffic but we fixed both sites:

* one is now using the Huawei HG635 that was sent with the TT biz package

* the other is using a standard Openreach "modem" that were used before combined router/ADSL units came about.

We updated the Draytek 2860's with the latest firmware and it made no difference. Also tried switching off things like HW acceleration but that did not work either.

Thanks ... that's interesting.

I did look at wireshark a couple of times and think i remember seeing re transmissions too but without traces of "normal" i ignored them as it's not unusual, and not unexpected when there are connectivity issues anyway.
At the moment i'm back to stable ... 5 days now
