BT Infinity combined modem / router recommendations

[link to this post]

Hi folks, I haven't logged in on here in years, so I decided to pay you all a visit to ask my question.

I have BT Infinity and am currently using a Draytek Vigor 2750n combined modem router (not sure if "combined modem router" is the correct term!).

I've had it for a lot of years and I'd like something new because, if the Draytek unit develops a fault or simply stops working, I'll have no internet until I buy something new. I plan to keep the Draytek as a backup.

I would like something that is a combined modem router and something that is as reliable as the Draytek. My budget is around £200 - £250 at a push.

No requirements other than it's getting old? Do you have BT TV? Do you use the wifi on the Vigor?

No other requirements really. I don't play games online - I just use it for watching Youtube and Netflix.

I don't have BTTV and there are 3 people in the house that use wifi, although it wouldn't get overly heavy use. I would watch Youtube videos or do the occasional bit of downloading. The other two people would also watch Youtube or sometimes Netflix.

Could you just upgrade to a later Vigor?

Any suggestions as to which model? I'm happy with the Vigor, but I don't know which of the newer models are good.

I dare say Iíll get shouted down, but why not just go the obvious route ?

Mine is rock solid with its new firmware, the wifi is impressive ... itís all you need judging by your usage description.

Thereís a 17 year old here who is single handedly working his way though all YouTube and Netflix have to offer. At other times 6 users all happily connecting at the same time . Simplicity to use and set up, and then you can get to choosing what else you might splurge your saved £200 on smile

Thanks for the reply Zarjaz.

I was actually offered a HH6 from BT for only £10 postage but I declined after reading the threads on the BT forums and on here. smile.

Some people seem to have been really lucky with them and have had zero problems, I'm not sure I want to take that risk though tongue

Hardly a risk for a tenner is it ?

They really do seem to have ironed out most of the initial bugs that were causing the noises about it ......

You're absolutely right.

At the time my thoughts were something along the lines of "this sounds so bad I'm not even going to waste a tenner on the postage".

I might give it a shot.

But, if anyone has any other suggestions feel free smile

That's the spirit smile

If they really were so hideously flakey, I suspect I'd have a fair idea due to my work.

I held off and used a VDSL modem and a 4 for donkeys, but when I moved they sent me one FOC, even then I was reticent. But I am happy to report the two issues I did have, the 14 day reboot (fixed by new firmware) and the weirdness between this router and a Pure Evoke wifi radio (exorcised by a local witch doctor/or possibly the firmware again) are resolved.
