Best (within reason) modem for long lines and a TI chipset

(realised I'd posted in the wrong place, so removed it - before anyone replied. Sorry!)

My Dad normally uses a Vigor 2820 via an Origin Broadband connection. Until recently it was actually a resold plusnet service, but he has now been moved over to Vodafone.

When they made the change, he was provided with new long details and there tech tech talked him through resetting the details in their Asus supplied router - Asus dsl-n14u_b1

All seemed to be working quite well well and the line was syncing around 3m, swapped in the 2820 with a long line modem firmware, and the syn rate is dropping, and is now closer to 2, along with a low SNR (seems to be around 0-1 at night and raises to around 4 during the day).

The BT IP profile of the line was logged as 2.25mpbs, but I am sure will now be dropping since I swapped the units back over.

The feature set of the 2820 is desirable to retain, so I'm thinking pop the Asus into Bridge mode (if possible), or use a spare vigor120 I have and feed that into WAN2 and ignore the modem in the 2820.

Old kit vs New kit.

Any suggestions?
