Slow wifi

[link to this post]

I have an old Acer Aspire One notebook, updated to Windows 10.

The WAP, fed from a 100Mbps Virgin cable, that supplies its wifi will deliver a 98Mbps download to a Galaxy A7 phone, seated next to the Acer, but the Acer only manages 13Mbps. I have added a dual band dongle to the Acer so it can use the less congested 5G channel, but that does not make much difference.

The Acer is not really used much for downloading data, so a new machine is not envisaged, but it would be useful to speed it up.

Any ideas please?

I have now tried wired ethernet to the Acer. Not much more download. Guess just old machine.

If its one of these, that is not a surprise:

This is over 10 years old in design.

Even if you have 4GB of RAM the CPU will be either an Intel Atom or an AMD APU, which both were slow at doing the work required, and you can add to that to the slow storage. The CPU will have quite an impact on wireless speed when its that slow.

I only use it these days to rip CDs and to backup the main micro SD card, to a micro SD card in its SD slot, I use as my source for hifi. Rarely do I download much to it.

I did upgrade to 4GB RAM when the HD burnt out due to over use.
