getting really bad latency in wow

[link to this post]

Well its been a bad day for downloading or playing online in WOW i get lantency 331ms around that number. I gave eclipse tech support a ring this morning/afternoon they couldn't find anything wrong but they said they would ring me back well that didn't happen. And is it worth me staying with eclipse much longer with the price i pay for a fixed 1mb'. I've been with ecplise since 2004 never moved to upto 8mb. But i think its time to go elsewhere i've looked at the packages that ecplise as, and there usage is way to low for what i need, i can get a better deal elsewhere.

I'm also getting those kind of ping rate, but I'm downloading as well.

But when I don't having anything running download the line ie no internet activity I get about 40 - 50 which still isn't good for gaming but better than 300. Also depends on the server you're pinging, some slower and some faster.

If you've no activity on the line and getting 300+ ping then that's bad. Try asking for the Interleaving to be turned off as this should decrease your ping rate and also decreases stability on your line.

I'll also be asking for the interleaving to be turned off after 10 days for my line to be stable, as I also play online games and 40 - 50 ping is no good, need to be 20 or less to be enjoyed.

Any ping rate above 50 will affect the enjoyment of the online gaming. As I mostly play football game, ball and players movenment lags badly, ping rate 20 - 30 would be ideal.

Average 347ms with online activities

Average 27ms without online activities.

Big difference, so only try to play online games with no other online activities and this should improve the ping rate, might be worth connecting to different servers if avaliable and see which one gives the best result for you.

Whats the IP address of the game server your connecting to? I'll see what my pings are to the server.

I just test ping www.jolt.co.uk, as the football games I play usually involves someone else hosting the game instead of a server unlike WOW, I think, as I don't play WOW.

At peak times the ping rates do go up to about 40 -50 without any other internet activities and at off-peak times the ping rates are acceptable of around 20 - 30.

Having a low upload speed probably doesn't help.

I feel your pain! I've gone from having a latency of 30-50 before Christmas, to a latency that never really goes below 250 since about November time. Most nights it fluctuates from 250 - 1000+ constantly, rendering games almost unplayable!

The most annoying part is that it was absolutely fine for the past 2 years, no problems at all. Then something happened and my speeds went from 7mb to about 1.7mb!! Rewired the entire house at great time and expense, had long chats with tech support, got it to about 3mb max, but most speed tests show 1.7 to 2.4mb max again now.

Being told that I am 'lucky' to have upto 3mb doesn't really cut it when I've had 7mb for the past 2 years. Adding insult to injury is when I spoke to one neighbour who has a stable 7.2mb connection with O2, and the neighbour on the other side (who is a tennant in a house that we own) who is also getting 7mb with O2!! If they can all get 7mb connections, and they are 10 yards from my house, why am I suddenly only about to get 3mb according to BT?

Pro Warlock's can't work with this kind of connection!! It's probably my neighbours on their super-fast O2 connections that keep ganking me whilst I am lagging out! laugh

Whats the IP address of the game server your connecting to? I'll see what my pings are to the server.

I would echo this. Whats the IP of the server that you are connecting to?

Have you tried running through the WOW help?

Hi Oriaz,

Is that ping rate of 250 - 1000+ with or without other internet activities during gaming?

Do you have Interleaving ON or OFF on your broadband connection?

If it's without any other activities then that's truly awful latency and makes online play unplayable, unless you're playing online chess or something that isn't timing crucial.

I am certainly not doing any heavy downloading or anything like that in the background. Especially with pings like this. The only other activity on the connection would perhaps be my brother doing some light web-surfing ... but he knows better than to download when I am playing smile. Actually, I am not too sure about Interleaving .. don't really know too much about that. Is it good to have it on or off? I'll check when I get home. I have a Belkin N1 Vision Router, but I use it wired ... never wireless for gaming!

Either way, it was absolutely fine upto about November last year with no problems at all, regardless of other activity on the connection. I never had lag (unless caused by WoW itself). Now I can expect a Yellow/Red connection 75% of the time when I am playing, with frequent disconnects in 'high-activity' situations (which usually means some very inconvenient point during some ICC 25 boss fight! laugh)

Cheers, Ori
