Questions as a new user...

[link to this post]

Hi, i've just signed on with Eclipse on their Broadband Business Gold package - switchover when fine on Monday as scheduled with no hiccups but I have a few questions:

1. My synch speeds are exactly as before when on a residential package - should I be seeing a higher up speed on a business package?

2. Am I 20:1 or 50:1 and how do I know?

3. Is it possible to remove interleaving from my line - my previous ISP were next to useless (blank wall: can't do it) - and i'm very close to my exchange EASOHAM so this is pushing ping up and speeds down for no good reason (line stats have been rock solid for years now)? I suspect this was enabled by mistake as I've never had line issues.

4. Would you expect me to see good performance at peak hours (i.e. 6pm-10pm for example)? One of the key things I'm looking for in this package is higher performance throughout the day.

I've moved from UKOnline via ADSLMAX and my exchange is not unbundled by anyone other than talktalk and no 21CN date exists as yet - therefore my max speed is ~8mbit and i'm synched at 7mbit currently (due to interleaving). Line stats should support 24mbit when it's OL (if ever) though.

Mode State Up Speed Down Speed SNR Margin Loop Att.
G.DMT SHOWTIME 448000 7616000 11.0 5.0

Thanks in advance.

Hi Timbob,

1. Business packages will have the same synch speed as Residential packages (if using the same ADSL technology ADSL, ADSL Max & ADSL 2+), the difference for Business packages are better contention ratio, faster upload speed (not applicable with Eclipse), Traffic Priority, better support response time etc...

2. Business packages are usually on 20:1 contention ratio (50:1 usually Residential), but I'm sure Andy can clarify this when he reads this thread.

3. Andy says it's possible, you'll need to request it via Eclipse tech support ticket system or maybe Andy can do something for you when he gets to this thread.

What sort of ping rate are you getting?

As I'm on the same package as you, I'm getting ping of about 40 - 50ms without any other internet activities.

4. If you're talking about throughput (download speed), then for me it's consistent throughout the day (3 - 4Mbps).

I'm with O2, synched at 8125 with interleaving on. I may be wrong but interleaving has nothing to do with synch speed.

Was Eclipse Home Option 1 & VM 2Mb
Now O2 standard

Yes, you're right, that's wrong. You'll get higher sync with fastpath.

I think Interleaving gives a lower latency (ping rate), better for gaming as less lag.

Turning Interleaving off will hopefully give a better online gaming with less lagging ingame, and it won't increase the sync speed.

Just found out Interleaving off = fastpath.

If this is prone to packet loss, will it be any good for gaming?

Yes, reduced latency should be better than packet loss. Pity you can't just turn it off and on when you want.

Hi Timbob,

If I could answer your questions in order first:

1. As Knt pointed out, the line itself remains the same, therefore the sync rates will stay the same.
2. In regards to the contention ratio. We don’t use a strict contention based system such as 50 : 1 or 20 : 1. What our packages are designed to do instead is to push as much speed as we can down your line at all times.
3. It should be possible to remove interleaving from this line. Please either drop me a PM or raise a ticket with Technical Support.
4. You should still see a good performance during peak times, please let me know if this isn’t the case.

I do think I should cover some of the differences between your package and our Residential packages

1. Our Business customers receive our business standard support. For example we aim to answer calls to Technical Support within 60 seconds.
2. We offer multiple static IP addresses.
3. The Business Gold Package is unlimited, so no usage cap.

These are features that are not available on any of our Residential products.

Please let me know if you have any further questions
