Slow or what?

[link to this post]

Hi

I have just got over a fair usage slowdown period and I'm on an early Evolution 1 package.
(I'm not sure why I got this, mabey someone is stealing my wireless??)

Anyway, speeds have been up and down for ages but now seem to be getting slower and slower. Today is the first day after the slowdown period and I'm getting just 1.8 Mbps download and 0.4 Mbps uploload acording to the speed tester here..

Thats not very quick is it?

Hi Just_Like_Magic,

Out of interest, were you getting similar 2 meg-ish speeds before your line was slowed down?

Have you tried using one of the availability checkers online to see what is expected for your connection / area? Personally I'm a fan of using the one over at the kitz website.

Please feel free to send me a PM if you'd like me to have a look at your line.

Andy

If someone may be stealing your wireless then perhaps they're using your connection whilst you are doing speed tests whihc would affect it?

If you think there's a security issue with your network, I'd suggest addressing that before complaining about connection speeds.

Thank you Andy, PM sent,

My speeds have fluctuated for ages now, even before being slowed down. Today (Daytime) for example typical download speeds have been 1.4, 1.8, & 2.0Mbps, all 0.4 upload. Then this evening I lost my broadband altogether for about an hour. Then it came back on and I have done a 3 tests this evening resulting in 3 same results.

Typical daytime today
My Broadband Speed Test

Typical evening result this evening
My Broadband Speed Test

BT Line Speed Estimation from Kitz..
Fixed ADSL: 2048 kbps (2 Mb)
DSL Max: 4000 kbps (4 Mb)
21CN WBC : 5500 kbps (5.5 Mb)

What do you make of that?

It is possible but the router is new and not been in service long. Yes I will set up some security on it.

Tests today as per my post above were carried out on my older hard wired router showing identical results of my wireless one.

I have swapped routers and filters before thinking there was a problem but whatever I used the speeds fluctuated wildly.

A pattern seems to be emerging here.

Daytime
My Broadband Speed Test

Evening
My Broadband Speed Test

Quite a difference but is seems a little more predicable than before.

Why are speeds so widespread?

Andy, you have not replied to my PM yet.
