Eclipse refuse to regrade to ADSL2+ (21cn)

[link to this post]

Hi

Has anyone else had problems getting Eclipse to regrade an ADSL service to ADSL2+ (21CN)?

All I want to do is regrade to 21CN but not start a new contract. I'm happy to pay the cost of the regrade, which as far as I can see is £13.20 inc-VAT.

So why are they refusing to do this giving a lame excuse:-
Thank you for your email.

Unfortunately we would not be able to transfer you across to the 21cn network on your current package. This is because this package does not support the 21cn network.

Our new packages would support this network. You would start a new contract with the new packages as this is the procedure we take.

I hope this helps with your query, should you have any other concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.

This is for a line still on the Eco Option 1 package.

Not all ISPs upgrade you to 21CN WBC when it becomes available, w/out taking out new contract.

Yes but I'm happy to pay the cost of the upgrade.

It is ridiculous they say that the package I'm on doesn't support 21cn when clearly it is just their choosing to force people into a new contract.

There isn't really any cost involved; someone just throws a software switch.

It really just a commercial decision which they have obviously taken.

Thing is it is such a long line that it was really only going to be an interesting trial to see if it might perform better. But a new contact and risk of not being better (or worst) there no way I can go-ahead.

Shame really.

I just need to chop down some trees instead then I guess.

That or dig that last 460 meters needed to connect to some empty ducts that were meant to be bringing fibre-to-the-home.

Post your current router stats.

You may not even benefit from ADSL2+ except on the upload.

Duh! You have a long & noisy line frown

You'd only gain on the upload. On reasonable lines you'd get about 1.2 Meg Up but I'm not sure how long lines behave on that. Not worth paying £££s for.

probably get another 500k downstream on a long line. Eclipse aren't alone in having "products" that don't use 21CN and failing to regrade. That's probably more forgiveable than the ISPs that email everyone saying they'll get an upgrade and then leaving 1/3 of them on the original (BT).

It what happened to me. After the local switch over I had those I know nearer the exchange and even further on a range of ISP getting improved speeds. I did ask but was effectively ignored even though my upstream dropped by a small amount. No one was honest enough to say they didnít re-grade you. Indeed you are told
ďIíve upgraded but I havenít noticed any increase to my speeds?
The new network will provide a more robust platform for future enhancements and upgrades and while in time you will have access to speeds up to 24Mbps, the majority of customers will not notice any significant changes to their broadband speeds as a result of the upgrade.Ē
not that you will get no real improvement unless you change product (or ISP).
What annoys me is all were paying much less than I did/do with eclipse. To enable an overnight back up I since switched products. Immediately my upstream doubled, downstream actually went down a little. But as I am over 4K from the exchange and have a dodgy line it was the upstream I find most useful for my overnight backups.
Were this a bank acting in this way dishonesty and profiteering would be a justified accusation but being an ISP we appear to expect it!
