ukfsn down?

[link to this post]

This morning I can't get mail and I also seem to be unable to connect to the ukfsn website.

Is everything down?

Yes.

There is a general power failure at the datacentre where our main servers are located.

Our backup MX server is currently accepting and holding incoming email so you wont lose any email.

I don't know when the power will be fully restored as that depends upon Telecity resolving the problems at the datacentre.

It's the second power failure for Telecity this month.

Oddly, the last one was on a Wednesday too (must be something about Wednesdays).

OK the power is now back and the servers are booting however there is a problem on the main database server which is going to take a while to fix (it may be a couple of hours!).

Until it is fixed the mail and web services are still offline. I'm working on this as hard as I can - which is why I am not answering the phone

Email services were restored at about 13:00

Customer web services were restored shortly before 15:00 hours.

Usenet service was restored at 15:45

The problem was caused by a complete power failure at Telecity's data centre where we have our main servers. Telecity have UPS and generator systems in place to cover this kind of thing but both the UPS and generator platforms failed to start resulting in a complete power loss. They have not explained how this happened as yet - no maintenance was scheduled so this was not an "at risk" time.
