Connection keeps dropping

[link to this post]

Ok problem started about 4 days ago. When started watching flash e.g Youtube internet would crash.

Assumed was router issue tried a brand new router getting same problems internet cutting out but this time not with only with online vids but general browsing.

Old router does not keep a log. New router keeps a log and kept saying primary DNS server down switching to secondary.

DNS I normally use
195.74.113.58
195.74.113.62

I got sick of this so decided to turn DNS to AUTO

This also made no dif still getting random disconnects only dif is this time router says dnsprobe[1308]: dns query failed .

I have run traces to the DNS servers and google.com getting no packet loss. This is very random disconnecting.

Already phoned entanet they gave me the usual its not our fault. Can anyone help? No Idea what causing this and using wired connection not wireless and also tried dif cables and plugging into master socket.

Also same thing happens on 3 dif pcs

Are you happy that the actual sync isn't also dropping?

FWIW I'm using the same DNS with no problems.

Might be worth trying OpenDNS to see if that changes the situation if it's definitely DNS and not the line dropping sync.

I can recommend RouterStats for monitoring your line in case it shows something else up.

Are you happy that the actual sync isn't also dropping? No idea what this means tbh?

Also have already tried open dns same thing happening. Currently seting up routerstats see if can help.

Sync is the lines connection to the exchange. Sync=Connection

Just trying to see if you are switching DNS addresses due to the line/connection/sync dropping smile

Well strangle the problem has no occurred yet today.

I was able to duplicate the problem over the last 4 days opening flash videos or opening loads of webpages at once. OFC I expect slow downs opening 50+ pages but don't expect to have to reboot router or wait for the router to reconnect automatically. This why I went and got new router thinking my 3 year old belkin was on its last leggs. But getting new router never solved the problem.

Old router = the router would freezup when opened flash videos ect.
New Router = Sometimes pages would not load saying no connection. New router would reconnect automatically and not freeze up.

Anyways due to having problems on both routers I have sent the new one back as waste money if both routers are having issues. Would like to find the main cause of the issue before spend more coin. I don't want to get BT out and charged if they dont find anything wrong £200 lot coin until 100% certain that its the line at fault.

EDIT: Happened again.

BT Speed tester

Download speedachieved during the test was - 246 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 250 Kbps

Not happy

i know the IP Profile for your line is - 250 Kbps problem not Enta's fault but dam annoying when troubleshooting problems for bt to screw my speed up. Anyways back to normal speeds but still having disconnections.

Switching to my old billion router. This has better log tracking than my belkin. Will post findings

Billion log 1
10/28/2011 16:20:24> SNMP TRAP 2: link down
10/28/2011 16:20:31> ppp_ready: ch:804c3548, iface:80440fcc
10/28/2011 16:20:31> SNMP TRAP 3: link up
10/28/2011 16:20:31> Accept() fail
10/28/2011 16:20:31> Accept() fail

Another Billion log

10/28/2011 16:30:15> SNMP TRAP 2: link down
10/28/2011 16:30:20> MPOA Link Down
10/28/2011 16:30:20> netMakeChannDial: err=-3001 rn_p=804affcc
10/28/2011 16:30:23> Last errorlog repeat 103 Times
10/28/2011 16:30:23> MPOA Link Up
10/28/2011 16:30:38> ppp_ready: ch:804c3548, iface:80440fcc
10/28/2011 16:30:38> SNMP TRAP 3: link up
10/28/2011 16:30:38> Accept() fail
10/28/2011 16:30:38> Accept() fail

Seems like any time the connection under any strain it drops.

Downstream Upstream

SNR Margin 13.5 , 26.0 db

Line Attenuation 18.5, 8.5 db

Data Rate 8128, 448 kbps

You are lucky to be on such a short line - else you would really be having issues!

Did you try my earlier suggestion of using RouterStats to monitor things?

I'm getting a little confused as I see you've also asked for "urgently need new router" over in DSL H/W...

Have you tried using your BT Test Socket to see if this changes things?

As mentioned earlier it would be good to know if you are losing sync/connection or just have DNS problems - this is important! It could just be a SKY box or other dodgy kit causing your connection to drop - totally different to DNS issues...

Well as stated I got a new router and sent it back due to still having issues. Round up of things I have tried.

Little round up

It seems like when the connection is under any load that it crashes.

I have tried different dns servers.
Tried 3 different routers
Changed all wiring
Tried master socket
Refitted my master socket e.g rewired it all check nothing is wrong with it.
I have tried multiple microfilters. I can sometimes replicate the
disconnection opening flash videos or multiple web pages at once this
is hit and miss tho.

The problem happens on 3 different pc's that i own they use dif
firewalls/antiviruses and i disabled them all for testing.

As for the software you linked I tried to get it to work but had to give up in the end.

As for asking for new router on another thread reason for that (at time of posting was not convinced the one I sent back that i bought earlier in the week was not faulty it refused to save some settings or reboot when told to). I was considering getting a new one but then dug out my old router for testing again. But tbh i think chances of all 3 routers being faulty is pretty slim. Granted my belkin is getting little old and my billion is also old but they are both dropping connection under same circumstances. According to my isp they are also telling me that my connection is dropping. I only have phone and router connected to phone socket and disconnected the phone for testing still no luck.

Basically this problem really starting to &*(^$% me off
